Skylar snorted, Confident that Joseph wouldn’t dare overstep his bounds.

He then asked, “Do you know who Natalie is to me? You brought her in to see me, and you still had the nerve to take her money? Didn’t you learn your lesson when I broke your finger back then? Do I need to chop off your hand for it to sink in?”

“I swear, I did this to save my own skin!” Joseph cried out. “Think about it, Mr. Zahn. Ms. Natalie wanted to come, but Cora wouldn’t allow it. If Ms. Natalie showed up here, Cora would find out for sure. And then she’d definitely

come after me.”

Joseph took a quick breath and kept explaining. “So, I had to come up with a story. I’ll tell her that Ms. Natalie pressured me and offered a bribe. I’ll play the greedy fool who gave in. Then, I’ll return the money to Cora so she won’t make things difficult for me.

“Besides, you and Cora are family. The money came from Ms. Natalie, passed through me, and would go right back to Cora. It’s just money going in a circle, isn’t it? Cora has already given you three daughters. She’s yours, so doesn’t her money belong to you too?”

“Son of a bitch, you’re pretty smart! Is this how you’ve been sweet-talking Yara?” Skylar asked, though his tone had lost some of its icy edge.

“I wouldn’t dare,” Joseph said quickly. “Ms. Zahn is sharp as a tack. She can see right through people. In front of her, all I can do is tell the truth.”

Seeing that the crisis had passed, Joseph probed further and asked, “Mr. Zahn, how did you manage to deal with Cora anyway? You two have three kids, so why aren’t you married? Instead, you let her marry Joseph. They sleep in the same bed night after night. How can you stand that?”

“You bastard! Stop poking your nose into my business. You’re no longer needed here. Get lost!” Skylar snapped. He clearly had no intention of discussing the matter.

Gemma and Jenna were waiting outside the whole time. They hadn’t heard any sounds of a struggle. Eventually, Joseph walked out unscathed. Beth who went in afterward showed no signs of alarm either.

“How did it go? Skylar didn’t give you a hard time, did he?” Gemma asked.

“A big shot like him wouldn’t waste his time on a small fry like me,” Joseph said casually, casting a reassuring glance at Jenna. “Don’t worry. I explained everything, and he bought it. It’s all settled.”

“Just focus on your work and learn to read the room. Stop getting into trouble!” Jenna said, realizing her concern for Joseph had been unnecessary. He was far more capable than he let on.

Gemma finally breathed a sigh of relief. Since Joseph had made her worry for nothing, she insisted that he buy her lunch to make up for it. He agreed and went to help Jenna with some errands, only to be summoned by Yara soon after.

“What did my brother do to you? Did he hurt you? Come here, let me check.”
