Joseph agreed with Yara’s idea. He had too many things to take care of, and once he set foot on Emerald Mountain, getting back out wouldn’t be easy.

He pressed her further, “Why won’t you tell me about your brother and Cora? Are you afraid I’ll go after her, and she’ll happen to fall for me?”

He simply couldn’t drop the subject and decided to provoke Yara even more.

Yara scoffed. “Cora would never fall for someone like you. Don’t even think about it!”

“How about I give it a try?” Joseph asked playfully.

“Go ahead, and you’ll be as good as dead!” Yara snapped, her face instantly darkening with displeasure.

Joseph couldn’t care less. Ignoring her warning, he continued, “Yesterday, I sent that woman you dislike away for your sake. Don’t think I wouldn’t dare do worse!

“You know, when I was born, a fortune teller told my dad I was a jinx and that I should be killed. It was my mom who fought to keep me alive. Later, that fortune teller and both my parents ended up dying because of me. Heh!”

“Alright, I give up!” Yara finally relented. “How about this? Once I’ve recovered and we get married, I’ll tell you more about my family. Until then, telling you would only put you in danger. Got it?”

Seeing that Joseph refused to back down, Yara had no choice but to compromise. She found it strange herself. Why was she caving in the face of his defiance?

She had never been in love before. She had no idea that the one who fell first was always the one to compromise, while the one who was loved got to be ruthless.

“Does your brother not marrying Cora have something to do with your family?” Joseph asked.

“Yes, so stop prying! Though you’re my man now, I shouldn’t interfere in what you do. But Cora had children with Skylar, so she’s practically my sister-in-law. It wouldn’t be right for you to go after her, get it?”

Joseph waved a hand dismissively. “Hey, you’re overthinking it. Why would I go after Cora? What’s so great about an old woman who’s already had three kids?”

He leaned back, a calculating glint in his eye. “I’m just curious about the relationship between your brother and her. So the next time she comes looking for me, I’ll know how to play my cards. If I can get more money out of her, I’ll ask her for more.”

“So in the end, you just want more money.” Yara rolled her eyes. “Look, if you need cash, I’ll give it to you. Don’t stress over it.”

Joseph probed a few more times. After failing to get what he wanted, he eventually left.

As he walked out, he noticed that Beth was warmer toward him than before. She even gave him her phone number –something that would have been unthinkable before. Clearly, she had begun to treat him as the Zahn family’s son-in-law.

After all, for someone like Yara to treat an ugly man with such affection could only mean that she truly loved Joseph.

Joseph was more than willing to get closer to Beth. The people Yara kept close at a time like this were bound to be her most trusted confidantes. Beth likely knew a thing or two about Yara as well.

After leaving, Joseph went to get some work done when Cora called. She asked if it was a good time to talk. Once he said it was, she went straight to the point. “Dr. Jebb, why didn’t you tell me that you and Yara are officially a couple now?”
