Aevening fell, Joseph did not return to Jenna and Gemma. After all, continuing to live with them would only put them in danger. Instead, he quietly made his way to Beatrice and the others’ place.

Alice was curious. “We tried calling you. Why didn’t you answer?”

Joseph replied, “I ran into a bit of trouble and had to stay out of sight for a few days. I only came back because everything has been settled.”

Joseph asked Beatrice whether she had gone back to the blind massage parlor. When he learned that she hadn’t he had her give him a massage, enjoying the relaxing treatment once again.

Once he was comfortable, he examined Alice’s knees and noticed she had developed a heat rash.

“What happened to you?” he asked.

Alice replied, “The air conditioner broke a few days ago, and we couldn’t get it fixed. We don’t know what happened, but all these rashes started appearing.”

Joseph examined her carefully and discovered that Beatrice had them too.

He searched around the room and eventually found a small packet of white powder hidden inside the grille of the air conditioner vent. There was only a tiny opening in the packet, allowing the air conditioner to blow out a small amount at a time, releasing it gradually.

Joseph said, “It looks like you’ve offended someone and they’re messing with you. Or maybe an old enemy has come looking for you.”

Alice examined the powder and asked, “What’s this?”

Joseph explained what he believed the substance contained and how it worked. It wasn’t intended to kill them outright, but to cause persistent skin rashes and discomfort. Untreated, excessive scratching could break the skin, causing the affected areas to spread and become infected.

That infection could ultimately become life-threatening.

Alice gritted her teeth. “We’re already in this state. Why won’t they leave us alone? Do they really have to watch us die?”

Then, she turned to Joseph. “Henry, can you help us?”

Joseph shook his head. “For now, the best thing I can do is try to find Joseph and have him treat your legs. As for fighting and killing people, that’s not really my specialty. Of course, I’m not afraid of trouble either. If there’s any trouble, I’ll find a way to deal with it.”

Alice nodded. “Thank you, Henry. Once my legs are healed, I’ll be your girlfriend. I’m even willing to marry you as repayment. My sister can be yours, too.”

Joseph chuckled. “You two really are something.”

He coughed awkwardly. He wasn’t helping them because he wanted anything in return; they were vulnerable, and his sympathy simply got the better of him. At the same time, their place served as a convenient hideout.

They were both disabled and didn’t have much of a figure, and neither was his type.

If he wanted women, Gemma and Jenna were both far more feminine. Even Rosalie was more tempting.
