Bernard snorted coldly. “I get it now. Are you trying to show off? You’ve started to gain some influence, and now you want to challenge the Lowell family openly?”

He had heard Cora mention several times that Joseph had grown close to people from Croma, especially Mavis, Joseph had treated her on multiple occasions, and she thought highly of him. In fact, it seemed like Mavis wanted to recruit Joseph to Croma.

If the Yaeger family could secure a miracle doctor like Joseph, they might be able to elevate themselves to the level of the mythical-tier families.

Bernard scoffed. “What are you planning to do? Are you going to take advantage of the fact that I’m powerless to fight back and kill me? Go ahead, then. Let’s see just how capable you’ve become.”

Joseph chuckled softly. “Are you trying to provoke me? It won’t work. You’ve been poisoned by the Zahns, and your body is already in horrible shape. Take good care of yourself and get plenty of rest, and you might still live for a few more years.

“Otherwise, you might not even live to see the new year. You’re already at death’s door. Do I even need to lift a finger?”

Bernard clenched his teeth. He knew that with Joseph’s medical expertise, there was no way to hide his true condition. “What exactly do you want?”

Joseph finally revealed why he was there. “I want to know one thing-did you know about Cora and Skylar from the very beginning?”

Bernard rolled his eyes. “Does it matter if I knew or not?”

Joseph replied, “If you didn’t know, I could treat you and help you live for a few more years. But if you were aware of it, then you’re Cora’s accomplice. Your entire family has abandoned all decency. Your very existence is an affront to morality and justice.”

Bernard glared at him. “Joseph, do you think you’re the only doctor in the world? Whatever you can do, other doctors can do as well. I’ll be the one to decide how long I live. Do you really think I need to rely on you? Quit flattering yourself. Now, get out!”

Bernard was deeply displeased with Joseph. In his mind, Joseph was still that useless man who had lived off the Lowell family for years-a nobody who had spent more than a decade idling away at the hospital without making any real progress.

Even if Joseph had suddenly decided to work hard, how much could he possibly improve?
