Joseph asked again, “So, I can’t refuse?”

Of course, that was merely a polite formality. In truth, he desperately needed this position. With it, he could move. Skylar around as he pleased and arrange for Beatrice and the others to come in for treatment.

Arthur smirked. “Of course not. But Dr. Jebb, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. This is only a transitional appointment. Once Jenna and the others are free to return, you can simply hand the position back to them if you no longer wish to lead.

“It’s settled, then. Go back for now. I’ll organize a meeting and announce the decision this afternoon. You should prepare a brief self-introduction and a few words to say.”

Joseph agreed and left. When he returned to his department, he immediately noticed that many of the medical staff were looking at him with newfound respect and an eagerness to curry favor.

It seemed like they already knew. News really did travel fast.

Joseph knew he couldn’t be stingy, so he arranged for lunch and afternoon tea to be catered for the entire department.

That afternoon, he officially took up his new position.

Afterward, Joseph announced several adjustments to the department’s operations, making it much easier for him to access and handle Skylar as he pleased.

However, someone objected.

Toby had originally been responsible for leading the medical sect’s forces at the Traditional Medicine Center. He had never expected Joseph to leapfrog him simply because of his relationship with Yara.

Even worse, the medical sect had appointed him to assist Joseph. Naturally, he wasn’t very happy about it. So when Joseph proposed his new measures, Toby immediately voiced his opposition.

Joseph was no longer the same man he used to be. Instead of losing his temper, he calmly proposed several additional measures that Toby had no grounds to oppose. After that, he summoned Toby to his office alone.

Joseph wasn’t particularly skilled at fighting, as evidenced by how he’d been beaten by Bernard’s and Cora’s bodyguards many times before. However, those bodyguards had been exceptionally strong, some even trained in martial arts.

Toby was different. He was a doctor, and he certainly wasn’t built like those bodyguards.

Besides, Joseph possessed immunity as Yara’s fiance. He didn’t believe that Toby would dare to attack him. Besides, there was something to be said for striking first.

Joseph casually picked up an arm-strengthening device he’d prepared beforehand and swung it at the young man.

Caught completely off guard, Toby instinctively raised his arm to block the blow. The strike fractured his arm, and he immediately began begging for mercy.

Joseph stopped and said coldly, “I just took this position, and I’m enjoying myself. Who the hell do you think you are, challenging me like this? Get on your knees!”

At that sharp command, Toby actually knelt.

Joseph replied, “Ms. Lowell, there’s no need to beat around the bush. If you want to see Skylar, you’ll have to disguise yourself. You can’t come in so openly. Once I determine that it’s safe, I’ll arrange for you to come in.

“But taking him away is out of the question. It doesn’t matter how much you offer me; I’d have to be alive to spend it.”
