Joseph mumbled to himself, “You’re coming tonight? Should I just keep you here forever, Cora?”
Jöseph knew that all he had to do was take Cora down and use his medical skills against her. He could leave her bedridden for the rest of her life, making her suffer without ever being able to escape her misery.
The vicious thought flashed through his mind, but in the end, he decided against it.
All he wanted was a peaceful divorce from Cora. He wanted her to apologize and compensate him for what she had done, and then he wanted them to go their separate ways.
After all these years, even if Cora deceived and humiliated him, he still loved her. Even if her love for him had been nothing more than an act, he had genuinely felt the tenderness she showed him at times.
Even during this period when he had been demanding a divorce, Cora had only wanted him to return to the family. She had never actually tried to hurt him. Even when Bernard wanted to cripple him, Cora had protected him.
Since Cora had never truly harmed him, Joseph didn’t want to hurt her either.
Of course, Cora might be spared death, but she would not escape punishment. She had deceived him, cheated on him, and betrayed him; he couldn’t simply forgive her.
He wanted to drag Cora down from her lofty throne and see whether she could still look at him with the same arrogance. He wanted to see if she would still try to control him as she once had.
The moment Cora’s call ended, Natalie called. After confirming that Joseph now had more authority, she said she wanted to meet him. More importantly, she wanted to see Sklar.
Joseph said, “The Lowell family and the Zahn family are currently at each other’s throats. Do you think you can even leave your mother’s side?”
Natalie replied, “I forgot about that. What am I supposed to do, then? How about I knock my mom out and come over?”
Joseph smirked. “That’s your problem. Don’t tell me about it. I don’t want to be your accomplice. I’m only here for business. If you want something from me, you have to pay the appropriate price. It can be money or something else of comparable value.”
Natalie frowned. “Why do you only think about money? Don’t forget who you are. You’re a member of the Zahn medical sect. My father is from the main family. You should be serving him unconditionally.”
He scoffed. “Why don’t you bring up a different relationship, then? I’m Yara’s fiance now, which basically makes me your uncle-in-law. Want to call me uncle a few times?”
Natalie retorted, “Are you trying to take advantage of me?”
Joseph said, “If you don’t have any money, quit trying to use your family. Just stay home.”
Joseph hung up and thought about how none of the three sisters were actually his daughters. The fact that it wasn’t because he was infertile, but because someone had been secretly drugging him to suppress his fertility, sent a chill down his spine.
The sheer malice of it filled him with righteous fury. Yet beneath that anger was a sense of misery. He was 40 years old, and he had no career, no family of his own, and no children.
The worst part was that he had spent more than a decade raising someone else’s children. Just thinking about it

nearly broke him.
the end, he forced himself to pull it together. 40 wasn’t that old; a man was supposedly in his prime at 40. If he worked hard enough, he could still build his career, have a family, and have children of his own.
It wasn’t too late for him to start over.
Yet, the moment he thought about having children, the first woman who came to mind was still Cora. It was almost as though some stubborn part of him wanted to prove something.
