Cora said, “Pick someone else. I can get you an 18-year-old freshman or a postgraduate student. Even a professor would work. Just pick whoever you like.”

Joseph replied, “I’m not considering anyone else. I want Fiona.”

Cora raised an eyebrow. “Why are you so obsessed with having a child? Wouldn’t you rather have money?”

He said, “Yara gave me money, and the Zahn medical sect gave me power. The only thing I lack now is a healthy, intelligent, beautiful young woman who can give me children. Fiona fits that perfectly. If she agrees, have her come see me. I’ll arrange a medical examination for her. If she’s infertile, I’ll return her.”

Joseph laid out his terms and parted ways with Cora. On the way back, he also gave Marlin some instructions. After Marlin, he would arrange for someone else to take his place and keep applying pressure on Cora.

To his surprise, Fiona actually appeared at the Traditional Medicine Center the next day. Even with makeup on, she failed to conceal her swollen, reddened eyes. Joseph could tell that she had been crying.

He said, “If you’re unwilling, then go home. I don’t like forcing women to do things against their wishes.”

Fiona gritted her teeth. “You hypocritical bastard! I hope the child I give you doesn’t end up as ugly and hypocritical as you.”

The man repulsed her. What did he mean by unwilling? What woman would willingly agree to this?

Joseph replied, “Then do your best to have a son. Sons usually take after their mothers in many ways, such as appearance and intelligence.”

He wrote up the examination orders and sent Fiona for a complete medical checkup, but he made sure not to arrange for her to jump the queue. The longer Fiona stayed there without running away, the more it would indicate that she was gradually accepting reality.

He added, “Honestly, I’m not that bad. These days, I’m one of the decision-makers overseeing medical affairs at Jenton University Hospital, the Traditional Medicine Center, Jenton General Hospital, the Women and Children’s Hospital, and several other major hospitals in Jenton.”

Fiona frowned. Henry was undeniably ugly, but he certainly had a way of getting things done. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been forced to be here in the first place.

She said, “You’re just borrowing the Zahn family’s influence. You’re nothing more than someone exploiting the power of others.”

Joseph scoffed. “I’ll concede that an individual’s ability and the platform they’re standing on aren’t the same thing. But if a person has no ability, how could they ever get onto someone else’s platform? And once they’re there, how could they wield any influence?

“Don’t just talk about me. You’re the same. If you hadn’t attached yourself to Cora, where would you be now? You have a villa worth eight million dollars, a sports car worth a million dollars, and a 500,000-dollar sedan. You probably have another two or three million dollars in savings as well.

“You’ve only been working for a few years, yet you’ve accumulated nearly 20 million dollars. Look at your classmates who graduated alongside you. How are they doing? Are they really inferior to you because of some enormous difference in ability?”

Fiona fell silent. Clearly, he knew her circumstatices extremely well.

Joseph continued, “You and I both have to rely on the platforms we’re standing on. But at the same time, those platforms also control us. Once the platform disappears, everything we have can be taken away.

“Cora packaged you into the successful woman you are today. Wasn’t that all so you could contribute to her one day? Isn’t the whole reason you’re here today because Cora raised you so she could utilize you?”

Fiona retorted, “You talk too much.”

She couldn’t stand having Joseph keep stabbing at her deepest insecurities, so she went off to undergo the examinations, feeling utterly miserable.

But by evening, when she received the medical report, her heart sank.

She placed the report in front of Joseph. “Here’s what you asked for. When do you want me? Tonight, or tomorrow night?”

Joseph had actually already read the report on his computer. Nevertheless, he pretended to examine it carefully and told Fiona to go home first.

Then he called Cora. “Fiona’s medical examination failed. I want to return her.”
