A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 761

Chapter 761

After parting ways with Yara, Joseph headed over to Hart Group to have a chat with Cora.

Cora had someone check whether Joseph was being followed. Only after making sure he wasn’t did she relax a little.

Though honestly, she figured she was overthinking it. If Joseph had the nerve to come see her, he clearly wasn’t worried about the Zahn family learning his whereabouts.

If anything, nobody in the Zahn family would even dare snitch on him. After all, he was practically untouchable in the Zahn family right now.

“Ms. Lowell, I’ve heard something, and I came here specifically to tell you. But it might upset you once you hear it, so I’m wondering whether I should even say it.”

“Is it about me? A rumor?”

Cora half expected this. From all the times she’d dealt with Joseph, she knew he wasn’t the type to lie. Everything he’d told her had helped her in some way.

She paused mid-sip of her tea, then said directly, “Go ahead. I’d actually like to know where I’ve slipped up so that I can avoid making the same mistakes in the future.”

“Well, you really should avoid this one! Fine, I’ll just come out with it. If I’ve got it wrong, you’re not going to have your people toss me off the building, right?”

“You and Owen are basically family already. And you’re the future head of the Zahn medical sect. You could throw your weight around all over Jenton and nobody would dare breathe a word of complaint!”

“Then I’ll just say it. I heard something that Dr. Hart has probably heard as well. The claim is that Skylar knew you before Dr. Hart ever did, and that’s why Dr. Hart believes your oldest daughter isn’t his biological child. Does any of that ring a bell?”

“That’s impossible!” Cora denied it immediately. “I didn’t know Skylar back then! The Zahn family did a great job keeping themselves hidden. I did suspect that there was some ultra-wealthy family in Jenton for a while, but they had no business dealings with me.

“Since my family was considered new money, maybe I wasn’t even important enough to get on their radar. And so I never went out of my way to cozy up to them.

“If my husband hadn’t kept digging and dug up the Zahn family, I still wouldn’t know about them to this day.

“And if I hadn’t seen the paternity test between my daughter and Skylar, I wouldn’t even have known such a person existed. So tell me how I could have possibly met Skylar before I met Joseph? That’s just absurd!”

Joseph was a little thrown off. Could Cora really not have known about the Zahns? He found that hard to believe, because Yara couldn’t possibly have been lying.

Just because Cora denied it, and just because she claimed she didn’t know, that didn’t mean it never

happened.

She said, “The Zahn family isn’t actually all that mysterious. So here’s a thought-what if the people around you and your business partners simply didn’t want you to know the Zahns existed?

“The more classified information I come across in the Zahn family, the more I see that the Zahns and the Dixons deal with each other all the time.

“You’ve worked closely with the Dixon family, yet the Dixons never breathed a word about the Zahnsto you. They must be playing some kind of game, right?

“Are they just grooming you for their own ends, or is this a diversionary tactic where the Dixons’ true target is the Zahn family?”

Cora frowned, asking, “Are you saying that everything I’ve seen was what other people wanted me to see, and everything I’ve gotten was what they wanted me to have? That I’ve been treated like an idiot and played for a fool this whole time?”

“That may well have been the case back then! So it’s entirely possible you actually knew Skylar a long time ago. But maybe he wasn’t using the identity of Skylar Zahn back then.
