Joseph could tell that Judy wasn’t lying. He asked a few more questions, and she had answered just as honestly, without holding back.

Joseph pulled out the key. Judy thought it over for a few minutes before suddenly remembering a hidden compartment with a keyhole in it.

He went over to try his luck, and sure enough, it opened a door leading to a cellar.

The cellar was pretty huge, and it was filled with mostly specimens-organs, embryos, and even human fetuses. There was also a cabinet filled with mostly research material.

Judy followed Joseph into the cellar. Seeing that Rachel had kept some photos of them together, she stared at them in a daze and suddenly started sobbing.

Finding Judy to be rather noisy, he warned her to be quiet, or he would kick her out of there. He found a large photo album stored in a plastic bag. He flipped it open and found a photo of Cora when she was very young. In fact, it was one of the first three photos in the album.

“Come here. What are these photos of women in the album all about?

Judy walked over to him. After looking through the photos, she said, “Edmund asked Ms. Yale to put together an album of pretty women. It included the prettiest young women they could find in Jenton back then.”

“The first two women were crossed out. Why?” Joseph frowned. The two women before Cora had been crossed out, but there was a check mark next to Cora’s photo. That meant she had been chosen.

The women after her had been crossed out too, until the 20th picture. There was a check mark next to a woman called Angel Hoffman.

Angel seemed strangely familiar to Joseph. He flipped to the information at the back and realized she had graduated from Jenton University around the same time he did.

More women were crossed out after Angel, with only a few marked with check marks. Cora’s photo was the third one in the album, and she was selected too. How absurd!

Judy said, “The ones who had been crossed out are the ones Ms. Yale rejected. The first two women were Owen’s women, and they both died giving birth.

“Only the ones with check marks passed Ms. Yale’s assessment. They were the best of the best.”

“Once they were chosen, what happened next? Are they just like you? Were they supposed to be surrogates for my father-in-law? Owen? Or even Edmund?”

“It could be any of them! About Ms. Lowell…” Judy fell silent. After thinking it over, she finally said, “I remember now. Back then, Ms. Yale said she hoped Mr. Skylar could marry a beautiful woman like her.”

So this was where it all began. Joseph had a feeling that all the problems and hatred started with Rachel’s idea. People didn’t just come to hate each other for no reason, and now he knew where it had started.

Joseph put the album away. He realized there was a lot more to go through, but he didn’t have time for that today. He had Judy wipe off the dust since he planned to take everything with him later.

Finally, he looked at a photo of Rachel and asked, “How exactly did my mother-in-law die?”

“Ms. Yale died of an illness.”

“An illness? She was a doctor. She even had a treadmill upstairs. She knew how to stay healthy.

“The only way she could have died is if she dropped dead out of nowhere. Otherwise, do you really think she’d die from an illness?”

Judy fell silent.

“Who was she last seen with before she passed away?”

“She was with Mr. Edmund and Mr. Zahn Senior. Ever since she left Mr. Zahn Senior’s place, she barely said a word.

“A few days later, she suddenly fell ill. She was gone before the night was even over. It was so sudden. Until now, I still can’t figure out why she was gone so suddenly.”

“Ha! Of course you can’t!”

Joseph had a gut feeling that Rachel had died from poisoning. Either she had taken the poison herself, or Owen had forced her to take it.
