It was better to prepare for trouble before it happened.

Joseph immediately contacted Yasmin and quietly had her spread a rumor that Fiona might be connected to the Croma faction.

A few days earlier, Fiona had waited in vain for Joseph to show himself. Eventually, she left Jenton and traveled to one of the major hospitals in Croma for a comprehensive examination and treatment.

That was where she met a familiar face at the hospital, Lacey. The two recognized each other and went to a cafe, catching up over a long conversation.

Fiona looked down on Lacey’s background, but at the same time, she couldn’t help envying Lacey. Lacey had obtained the very man Fiona dreamed of but could never have.

Lacey got straight to the point. “Are you really a spy?”

Fiona smiled bitterly. “Would you believe me if I denied it? Besides, I don’t have the energy to prove anything right now. I need to focus on recovering first.”

Fiona neither confirmed it nor denied it.

Lacey had a look of realization on her face. “I get it now. You’re one of those undercover agents who has been undercover for so long that even you don’t know you’re a spy. I guess that means you’re a sleeper agent? Or maybe a double agent?”

Lacey had been driven out of Jenton by Cora, so she and Fiona were essentially in the same boat. That made it easier for them to speak openly with each other.

Fiona didn’t answer. If she really was a spy, nobody had ever given her any instructions or told her what she was supposed to do. But if she wasn’t one, then why had the rumor suddenly appeared?

Part of her even wished she really were an undercover agent. That way, she might not have felt so bitter about being driven out of Jenton by Cora.

Lacey continued, “Well, it doesn’t really matter if you’re one or not. Now that you’re in Croma, help Joseph and me investigate something. Do you still remember Grace?”

Fiona nodded and said with a hint of jealousy, “She was with Joseph. If she didn’t die, then Joseph would have divorced Cora to be with her. Why are you bringing her up?”

Lacey replied, “Joseph suspects foul play in her death. He tasked me with investigating her actual cause of death, but I’m unfamiliar with Croma. I don’t dare make the investigation too obvious, either. So I’ve gotten nowhere all this time.

“You’re so smart. I’m sure you can think of something. Please help me.”

Fiona said, “I should help you since this concerns Joseph, but Joseph never asked me to do this. I’ll just consider this a favor you owe me. You’ll have to repay me someday.”

She planned on forcing Lacey to distance herself from Joseph once the investigation yielded results. That way, she would have one less rival for Joseph.

Lacey nodded. “Fine, but don’t ask for too much when the time comes. I’m broke!”

She assumed Fiona was asking for money. Lacey didn’t have much herself, but she figured Fiona wouldn’t demand too much. And if she really couldn’t afford whatever Fiona wanted, she could always ask Joseph. He would find a way to pay.

Lacey then told Fiona everything she had discovered so far.

She carefully left Yasmin out of the story. Yasmin had explicitly warned her never to reveal her involvement, no

matter what.

Afterward, Lacey reported the entire meeting to Joseph.

In Jenton, several days later, Owen recovered from his cold. But his overall condition continued to deteriorate. He had even begun experiencing headaches and dizziness, which were both symptoms that were unusual for

him.

The doctors of the medical sect held a consultation. Their conclusion was that he was suffering from anemia combined with the normal effects of aging. So they began treating him for anemia and even performed a blood- exchange procedure.
