However, Rhea stubbornly refused to sleep with Joseph unless he gave her a whole bottle.

She thought that she had the final say in the household. If she refused him, Joseph would have no choice but to spend his nights alone. She had no idea that Joseph simply didn’t bother forcing her. It wasn’t that her words carried any real weight, but that Joseph had no desire to sleep with her in the first place.

One day, Rhea came back from Owen with the management rights to yet another family business and handed them over to Joseph. “As usual, go handle it. If you need any documents, I’ll get Dad to sign them.”

Joseph looked at her. “Don’t you get it? Your father is testing the abilities of your descendants. He’s giving you businesses to run independently, and once some time has passed, he’ll evaluate your performance. Whoever gets the best results will become his successor.

“Yet instead of working hard, you’re just dumping it all on me? I only know how to treat patients. I don’t know the first thing about running a business.”

Rhea said, “Then just do whatever you want. Other than figuring out how to come in last, don’t worry about anything else.”

Joseph grinned wickedly, and he asked with a hint of mockery in his voice, “Is it possible that whoever comes in last will get sacrificed?”

Rhea panicked. “Don’t try to scare me!”

If coming in last really meant getting sacrificed, wouldn’t she be the obvious choice? She was an addict, and plenty of other family members already had complaints about her. If the family decided to sacrifice her, no one would voice any complaints.

After all, who would stand up for a useless person like her?

Yara said, “Don’t scare her like that. Rhea, I’ll help you.”

Managing a company was something she was quite good at, but Joseph rejected the idea. “You should just focus on recovering. You’re not allowed to meddle in any of this.”

Yara was speechless. She knew that Joseph simply didn’t want her anywhere near the money. Without money, she would have even less say in the family.

Joseph went through the projects Rhea had handed him and studied them carefully. He soon discovered that they were all solid ventures. There was certainly room to improve them, but doing so in the short term would be difficult.

After all, these were already profitable business models that had survived the market test and earned public

acceptance.

After weighing his options, Joseph decided not to change anything at all. He would simply let the businesses continue operating at their existing scale. In fact, he didn’t even intend to let the companies know that Rhea existed.

He started to wonder if his initial judgment had been wrong. The best strategy to respond to change might be to make no changes at all. As for the businesses he had just inherited, any alterations would be disrespectful to

Owen.

Sometimes, protecting an empire was more important than conquering one.

As far as Owen was concerned, he and his forefathers had already fought to build this empire. The younger generation only needed to preserve it.

Joseph still visited the companies himself and conducted a round of research and inspections. Afterward, he wrote a report and handed it to Rhea so she would at least have something to show.

Several days later, Joseph returned to Emerald Mountain. He once again began studying the materials Rachel had left behind, learning the biomedical knowledge and techniques she had researched during her lifetime and incorporating them into his own medical system.

At the same time, his understanding of how to use medicine as a weapon continued to improve as well.

Judy came in and busied herself with her work while giving Joseph an update. “Sir, people have been discussing your attitude toward the companies, and quite a few of them are unhappy that you’re not doing anything. Shouldn’t you push Ms. Rhea a little? She could at least put on an appearance.”

Joseph shook his head. “Their opinions don’t matter. What does Owen think?”

Judy said, “He hasn’t said anything. It seems like everything is still in his control.”

Joseph scoffed. “Then don’t worry about it.”

Joseph looked at Judy and suddenly remembered what Skylar had told him. “You were an orphan, right? Where were you from?”

She replied, “Southwell.”
