Chapter 366 Inspection and Interrogation
Finished
He turned around and saw Amelia still standing at the door, frozen in place, like a grade–school kid waiting to be scolded.
His
eyes stayed on her for a few seconds. Then he tipped his chin toward the couch. His voice gave nothing away. “Go sit over there.”
Amelia obeyed. She shuffled over and perched carefully on the edge of the couch.
The cushion beside her sank a little.
Mason sat down beside her. The pleasant scent on him, mixed with the cold air from outside, wrapped around her at once.
Her heart jumped up to her throat. She didn’t dare look at him. She stared at her toes and waited for judgment.
She thought he would ask why she had been staring at him all afternoon. Or what she and Lily had been whispering about.
But when he spoke, his words left her completely stunned.
“Open your mouth.”
“Huh?” Amelia looked up, confused.
Under the warm, dim light, his handsome face was very close. His expression was serious, more serious than she had ever seen.
He repeated himself. “Stick out your tongue. I need to check it.”
The room was quiet. Outside, the wind and snow made a soft, distant rustle.
A spotlight above the couch cast a warm yellow glow, wrapping them both inside it.
In that hazy light, Mason’s eyes looked deep and unreadable. He watched her closely, as if he could see straight through her thoughts.
Amelia felt her cheeks heat up again.
The request was far too intimate and deeply embarrassing.
At this distance, under his steady gaze, sticking out her tongue, just thinking about it made her
toes curl.

hesitation only made her look guilty and obvious.
She lowered her eyes, trying to escape his intense stare.
“Hurry up.” His patience seemed thin. His voice dropped lower.
In the end, under the weight of his gaze, Amelia gave in.
She closed her eyes for a second, then slowly parted her lips and carefully stuck out the tip of
her tongue.
It was soft and pink, shining slightly and moist under the warm light.
At the very tip was a small, bright red spot from the burn, like a tiny strawberry seed that had fallen there by accident. It looked painful and somehow seductive.
Mason’s throat bobbled on its own.
His eyes stayed on that red spot for two full seconds. His gaze darkened at once.
He didn’t say a word, however. He straightened up, reached for the hotel phone on the coffee table, and dialed room service.
“Hello. Please send a bucket of ice to room 808. Thank you.” His voice was calm and polite again, with no emotion at all.
While they waited, Amelia pulled her tongue back quickly and shut her mouth tight.
She stared at her hands, fingers clasped together, and didn’t dare say a word.
Amelia knew. The real questioning was about to begin.
Sure enough, Mason leaned back against the couch and crossed his legs.
“Now, tell me,” he said, looking down at the fluffy top of her head. “This afternoon in the car and again at the ruin site, why were you staring at me like that the whole time?”
Amelia’s mind was racing. She searched for any excuse that might get her through this.
Lily’s plan was absolutely off–limits. There was no way she could explain that X–ray–level stare.
In a rush, she lifted her head and forced what she thought was a natural smile. “Because you’re gorgeous.”
Mason narrowed his eyes, a dangerous glint flashing through them.

Suddenly, he leaned in. Before Amelia could react, his cool fingers caught her chin.
He made her lift her head and face his dark, steady gaze.
The distance between them vanished. In his deep eyes, she could even see her own panicked reflection.
