Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Outside the school gates, Dad’s face looked like he’d just eaten shit.
And yet, those relatives still came up to him with fake smiles and congratulations.
“I was wondering why you brought us here today-turns out you had such a huge surprise planned! Josie’s always been so quiet, but who knew she was this impressive? Congrats, Joel”
“Yeah! She’s the first person in the whole family to get into Harvard. You’ve gotta throw us a celebration dinner!”
“Make sure you invite me! I’ll bring my son so he can soak up some of that Harvard energy.”
The more they praised me, the uglier Dad’s expression became.
But he had no choice but to force a smile. “Sure, sure. Definitely.”
What’s said is said. There’s no taking it back.
He’d been holding a grudge ever since I cut ties with him.
But for the sake of Harvard’s reputation, fine-he’d give me one more chance.
After school, while my classmates were crowding around me with congratulations, Aria suddenly dragged me out of the
classroom.
I looked up and came face-to-face with Dad’s condescending expression.
“Hmph. I’ll adHarvard, you’ve got some skills. You can move back home. But froin now on, you better listen to me. Even if you got into Harvard, I can still make your life hell.”
Aria was still reeling from the shock of me getting into Harvard, but she forced herself to chime in.
“Yeah, sis. And while you’re at it, tutor me in physics. If someone as dumb as you can do it, maybe I can get into Harvard too.”
Looking at the identical greed and arrogance on both their faces, I let out a cold laugh.
“A month ago, you stood right here and said you wished you never had me as a daughter.”
“You threw all my stuff out and swore you were cutting ties with me forever.”
“Surely you haven’t forgotten something that important?”
Both their faces darkened instantly.
Dad was used to bossing me around. He exploded in rage. “You little brat! I came here personally to bring you back, and you’re still talking back? So what if you got into Harvard? Without my money, you can’t even afford tuition!”
I calmly reminded him, “The school just gave me $5,000. I can tutor over the summer to make money. Once school starts, my

professor’s paying me a $3,000 monthly stipend. I can also-”
With every word I said, their faces grew darker.
In my description, I didn’t need them at all. I could shine on my own.
In fact, my future was even brighter than I was letting on.
Now they were the ones who needed me-to make them look good.
“I’m your father! What I say is law! You’re coming home with me today!”
“And that money-what does a student need that much cash for? Hand it over. I raised you for eighteen years. Now it’s time for you to pay me back.”
Aria chimed in, “Yeah, sis. Dad’s just looking out for you. It’s not safe for a girl to live alone. At least at home, someone can prevent you from the storm outside.”
