Chapter 38
Antonia snorted. “Diana, Beth is a shareholder and the hotel’s legal representative. What power do my words have?”
Diana’s expression darkened. “Fine. I’ll talk to her for you.”
That morning, just after finishing yoga and on her way to breakfast, Bethany received a call from Diana. She put it on speaker. “Hey, Mom.”
“I heard from Antonio that you’ve stirred up quite a bit of trouble since you started at the hotel.”
Bethany paused. “Uncle Antonio told you that?”
“Yeah. He wouldn’t lie, would he?”
Diana continued earnestly, “Beth, I get that you’re eager to prove yourself and want to stand firm at the company quickly. But you don’t really know much. Antonio has been running the hotel all along.
“You’re not a kid anymore. You need to listen more, learn more, and stop bossing people around. Otherwise, how’s Antonio supposed to teach you? Now, apologize to him. If not, maybe you should start as a regular employee.”
Diana went on and on. Bethany suddenly lost her appetite for the croissant in her hand.
Silas, who had just stepped out of the bathroom, heard every harsh word.
He watched Bethany as she held her croissant. Her eyes were cast downward, and the corners of her mouth were turned down.
He strode over and grabbed her phone. A faint smile played at his lips as he said, “Diana, this is Silas. If you keep going on, Beth’s going to start crying. What you’re saying isn’t serious anyway. But if Beth cries, I’ll have to spend some time cheering her up.”
Diana was caught off guard. She wasn’t sure if Silas was joking, but he was clearly defending Bethany.
She forced a smile and said, “Silas, I didn’t mean it that way. I’m just worried that she’s being overzealous.”
“Diana, I can’t help but notice that Beth’s uncle is pretty eager to tattle.”
Silas‘ voice carried a casual tone but with a sharp warning beneath it. It made Diana hesitate to speak any further.
Bethany stared blankly at him. “You… Thanks.”
Although she had no recollection of ever shedding a tear.
Silas handed the phone back to her. “Pushover. Don’t answer calls you don’t want.”
Bethany smiled bitterly. She hadn’t expected Diana to turn into a life coach so early in the morning.
“So, your hotel lost some clients?” Silas asked.
Bethany took a big bite of her croissant until her mouth was full. “It looks like it. I haven’t been to the company yet, and my uncle hasn’t mentioned it,”
The client had been lost because of Silas, though Bethany was unaware. If he hadn’t called the media, Noah wouldn’t have pinned this mess on Elysian.
Silas pulled out a piece of tissue and handed it to her. “I’ll drive you to work later.”
Bethany declined. “It’s okay. I’ll drive myself.”
Silas clicked his tongue but didn’t push it.
