A Mix-up Made Me His Enemy's Woman novel Chapter 43

Chapter 43

Bethany hugged her knees and curled up in the corner. Her voice was already hoarse from screaming, yet no one came to open the door.

Since the attic had no windows, the musty stench of rotting wood seeped into her nose.

Through the gaps in the planks, a few threads of moonlight filtered in. She knew that night had fallen.

More than ten years ago, Bethany had been locked up like this once before. She was seven then and spending her summer at Diana’s place.

It had been only a year since she lost Jack, and she clung desperately to Diana, craving even a scrap of familial affection.

But Diana had just married Gary back then and had not yet secured her position as his wife. She had neither the time nor the heart to care about Bethany.

Back then, Bethany was just Ella’s playmate.

That year, fiveyearold Ella had tricked her into this very attic, saying that she needed help fetching a toy.

Bethany never imagined that she would be locked inside for an entire night by a child two years younger than her. She had cried until her throat gave out. In the end, it was Noah who carried her out of the attic.

Bethany would always remember Noah from that day. She never expected that the boy she had admired for years would eventually become her boyfriend.

Too bad it had all been nothing more than a dream.

That incident left her with severe claustrophobia. Being in any narrow, dark space quickened her breathing, leaving her feeling suffocated.

She dug her nails into her palm and forced herself to stay calm.

Bethany, you’re not seven anymore. Calm down. It’s just dark. There’s nothing to be afraid of,she murmured to herself, trying to keep herself together.

After her date, Ella returned home. Noah walked her to the door.

Noah, dinner was really good tonight. Thank you,she said sweetly.

Noah ruffled her hair. Alright. Go on in.

Ella felt reluctant to part but happy inside. However, when she got home, she noticed that her parents looked oddly displeased. Mom, what’s wrong?

Diana forced a smile. Nothing. Did you have fun on your date?

Ella was still basking in happiness. We had a great dinner, and we even watched a movie.

Normally, Diana would have asked for details, like the movie’s genre, but she showed little interest that day.

Ella felt slightly annoyed but said nothing and went straight to her room. The moment she turned on the light, Leo raised his brows at her, smirking. Ella, that woman came earlier.

Who?Ella asked, taking off her watch.

Bethany.

Leo never viewed Bethany as a sister. He didn’t acknowledge having any poor relatives. The only sister in his mind was Ella.

After all, they shared the same surname.

Ella narrowed her eyes. Why did she come here?

Who knows? Dad even scolded me because of her. I was annoyed, so I went upstairs. Later, they seemned to argue downstairs. I followed her and saw her go into the attic.

Ella’s eyes lit up. You locked her in the attic?

Leo chuckled before he said, You taught me that. We used to mess with the maids like this all the time. Bethany’s just another maid in our house anyway.

Ella smiled faintly. Hearing that eased her anger. She still remembered the slap from last time. She said, Alright. Don’t tell

anyone.

Leo was stunned for a second. Are we not letting her out tomorrow?
