Chapter 49

From somewhere to her side, Silas caught part of Bethany’s phone call. “Well, well. Not being a pushover today, huh?”
Bethany bristled. “Mr. Brennan, do you always eavesdrop on my calls?”
Silas scoffed. “Ungrateful thing, aren’t you? I shouldn’t have bothered saving you that day.”
Realizing she’d misspoken, Bethany immediately put on an awkward smile to smooth things over. “Mr. Brennan, if you don’t like the cruise gift, I can get you something else.”
Silas fixed his gaze on her and smiled. “That works. How about a pair of watches instead? A couple’s set.”
Bethany froze for a beat, then asked cautiously, “Do you mean two men’s watches, or a man’s and woman’s set?”
The smile that had just appeared on Silas‘ face vanished at once. “The latter! Ms. Porter, I don’t think I need to explain what a couple’s set is, do I?”
Bethany forced a stiff smile and pressed her lips together.
This man really was mercurial. Why did he just snap all of a sudden?
Diana realized right away that she’d been blocked.
When Gary asked about it, she didn’t dare mention a word.
Thus, Gary assumed that Diana had successfully smoothed things over with Bethany.
It was the first time Diana had ever seen her usually gentle daughter lose her temper. She knew she was a little biased, but Jack was gone now. Diana had to plan for her future.
If she didn’t favor Ella, how was she supposed to secure her place in the Reid family?
Ella looked at Diana’s strained expression, then at Gary’s equally grim face. “Dad, Mom, did Beth cause you trouble again?”
The word “again” carried a divisive undertone.
“Ella, if only Beth were half as considerate as you are,” Diana said.
That single sentence pleased both Ella and Gary.
Ella smiled sweetly. “Mom, Beth is probably still upset with me. You might not know this, but when she was Noah’s secretary, she kind of had feelings for him.”
“What?” Diana was shocked. “She had feelings for him?”
“Yeah,” Ella replied with a faux smile. “But Noah only has eyes for me, so I don’t blame Beth for disliking me.”
“Don’t worry. She won’t bother you again in the future. After all, she’s already mar-”
“That’s enough!” Gary cut in. “I believe Beth no longer has feelings for Noah. Now, let’s have lunch.”
Ella looked at him suspiciously, then glanced at Diana.
They had stopped mid–sentence.
What were they hiding, exactly? Was there something even she was not allowed to hear?
That said, Ella had lunch plans with Noah today, so she didn’t dwell on it and went upstairs to get ready instead.

Noah had cleared his schedule for noon to pick Ella up from her house. Per usual, she was dressed as adorably as ever.
Standing next to her, Noah often felt like he was an adult beside a child.
He slipped into a parental tone without realizing it. “The weather’s getting colder by the day. Aren’t you cold, wearing so little?”
As he spoke, he went to the trunk, retrieved a blanket, and draped it over her legs.
Ella stuck out her tongue playfully. “I knew you wouldn’t let me get cold. Oh right, Noah. Beth actually came back a few days ago and had another fight with my mom.”
Noah’s fingers tightened on the steering wheel. “What happened?”
Ella pouted. “I don’t really know. My mom was furious, though. It seemed like Beth forced Leo to apologize or something. Anyway, things have been pretty tense at home these days. Dad even kicked Leo out of the house.”
She deliberately exaggerated everything, smearing Bethany at every turn.
Noah’s expression remained calm. “Well, as long as she doesn’t bully you. Alright, let’s go now. Don’t let irrelevant people affect your mood.”
Ella smiled smugly. “She wouldn’t dare bully me. I’ve got you backing me up, after all.”
Yet, the person Noah called irrelevant during the day checked into Elysian Hotel that very night.
By coincidence, Bethany was showing the new head of security around to familiarize him with the premises.
Typically, this wouldn’t have been her job, but William’s child was sick, and she wasn’t an employer without any compassion.
That was how the two ran into each other unexpectedly.
Bethany nodded slightly in acknowledgment and didn’t intend to stop and greet Noah.
In fact, that nod was only because Noah was a guest at her hotel. If this were any other place, she wouldn’t have spared him a glance.
“Ms. Porter, do you know that man?” the new hire, Ashton Wagner, asked.
Bethany shook her head. “No. He’s just a major client.”
