Chapter 64
Bethany soon noticed Evan behind her.
Seeing how clearly biased Eloise was, she knew there was no point in continuing this conversation.
She took Evan’s hand decisively, ready to leave. “Miss, I’ll have the child’s father speak with you personally tomorrow.”
As she turned to go, Noah instinctively grabbed her hand.
For some reason, Noah felt that after today, his chances of being alone with Bethany would become increasingly rare.
The moment he met Bethany’s cold eyes, he saw the undisguised disgust in them.
He wasn’t mistaken. It was unadulterated disgust.
That look sent a flash of panic through Noah’s heart, and he reflexively released her hand.
But Bethany left without looking back.
Noah stood there watching her disappear.
Meanwhile, Eloise interrupted his racing thoughts, her face flushed a shade of pink.
“Well, Henry’s uncle… Could I perhaps get your number?”
Noah glanced at the phone she held out with equal disgust and flashed a faint smile. “Sorry, I’m not the child’s guardian. You should contact my sister instead.”
In the car, Bethany looked at Evan with guilt on her face. “I’m sorry, Evan. I wasn’t able to help you sort this out. We’ll probably need your father to handle it himself.”
Evan huffed indignantly. “There’s no need, Aunt Betty! Uncle Silas is on his way!”
Her heart jumped. “You called your uncle?”
“Yeah!”
Evan suddenly hung his head. “My dad’s really busy. He’s still on a business trip, and talking about Mom would just make him sad again.”
Bethany’s heart ached at how mature this
six–year–old had to be. He was still just a kid.
Bethany patted his head soothingly. “Let me check your bruise first. Come on, there’s a clinic over there. Let’s get it treated.”
“There’s no need.” Evan squirmed.
Bethany smiled reassuringly. “It’ll be bad if it scars.”
The injury was actually minor and wouldn’t scar, but Bethany was just trying to scare him a little.
Evan treasured his face, so he hurried after Bethany and obediently let the doctor apply medicine to the cut on his lip.
When they came out, Evan couldn’t help worrying. “Aunt Betty, I won’t be disfigured, will I? I’m so handsome. What if I can’t find a wife later because of this?”
Bethany fell silent at that. This cocky streak reminded her of Silas.
Just as she thought of the man, she spotted his tall, straight figure.
He’d switched to a Maybach today and parked it behind her car. The man leaned casually against the door and waved at them from across the street.
