Chapter 69
Bethany pressed her lips together. “People will talk if they see us. Mr. Brennan, we need to be clear about some things. Yesterday was an accident, so I can let it go. But you’re into men.
“Aside from acting in front of your family, we should keep our distance. You need to make things clear with your housekeeper so she doesn’t get the wrong idea.”
“She works for my father,” Silas said coolly. “Why don’t you tell him that yourself?”
Bethany shut her mouth at that. She shouldn’t have wasted her time arguing with him to begin with.
Today, Julian had asked Silas to bring Bethany home with him for dinner.
When Bethany got out of the car, she immediately spotted the legendary “older brother” sitting on the couch.
Refined and scholarly, his features were sharper than Silas‘. Silver–framed glasses rested on his nose, making him look even colder than Silas did, with the commanding presence of someone in power.
It was no wonder that Evan was scared of his father.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Bethany said politely.
Julian nodded. “I heard about what happened yesterday from Silas. Thank you.”
Then, he turned to his son. “Evan, don’t trouble Aunt Betty with things like this in the future, understand?”
Evan pouted. “But you weren’t here.”
Julian said flatly, “You know my secretary’s number-”
“Enough!” Jeremy cut off his son’s lecture. “You’re a father who leaves everything to your secretary. You should spend more time with Evan!”
Jeremy huffed. “Or just find Evan a mother!”
Evan nodded enthusiastically in agreement, but his smile froze when he caught his father’s stern expression.
Bethany suddenly realized that Silas seemed much more approachable than his older brother.
With Julian’s stern, unsmiling demeanor, finding him a wife seemed impossible.
Silas looked at her with a mischievous expression, and she quickly lowered her head to focus on her food.
Meanwhile, Julian observed the interaction between his younger brother and sister–in–law, his eyes unreadable.
After dinner, Evan pulled Bethany out to play in the garden, while the two brothers chatted in the study.
“Getting attached?” Julian asked.
Silas smiled, leaning against the windowsill, his eyes fixed on the woman running around the garden.
“Yeah.”
Julian’s lips curved slightly, and he said nothing more.
“Make it work. I’m flying to Aeredale tomorrow. I should be back by the wedding.”
“Another inspection trip?” Silas asked.
“Yeah. A month this time.”
Silas sighed. “Jule, aren’t you going to find Evan a mother? The last incident was resolved, sure, but that other kid’s verbal attacks still hurt Evan. Your son acts carefree sometimes, but he’s still just a six–year–old.”
