"""Ascension?"" he repeated softly.
A rough little laugh left him. The smile that followed sat thin on his face, worn down by years that had offered him no clean road forward."
"I did ascend. 38 thousand years ago, on the rear mountain of Wellspring Order, I successfully ascended. Auspicious clouds descended from the heavens, golden lotuses rose from the earth, and all living things shone with light.
I believed that was the end of cultivation, the perfection of the path, the destination every cultivator spent a lifetime chasing. With my whole chest burning for it, I stepped into the higher celestial realm."
He lifted his head and looked toward the domed ceiling of the great hall, as if his eyes could pass through stone and find the world that waited above it.
"But only after I ascended did I understand. The world above was not the world I wanted. There was no lineage of the Aureate Way there, no inheritance, only endless conflict and slaughter.
Powerful adepts ruled, the weak became food. There was no righteousness to speak of, no mercy worth mentioning, only the bare law of the strong devouring the weak.
My heart of the Way nearly broke there. I could not accept a world like that."
"My Way is protection, not slaughter. My sword exists to shelter the living, not to butcher my own kind.
But in that world above, only the strong survived. Only by growing stronger without end, killing without end, could one avoid being discarded. I could not do it, and I did not want to."
His voice sank lower, rough at the edges. "So I lowered my own cultivation and returned to the Seventeenth Firmament. But Heavenly Law was flawed. After I came back, my cultivation could never return to its peak. I could only remain at peak Golden Immortal Level Three.
I once meant to return to Wellspring Order and continue teaching the Way. But my cultivation was no longer what it had been, and my appearance had changed as well. If I went back, I would only bring trouble to the order, perhaps even draw the eyes of those who coveted what remained of me."
"With nowhere else to go, I happened upon this Primordial Sanctuary. When I first entered this Primordial Sanctuary, there was already a Warden here. He told me to guard this Genesis Dew and wait for the right person.
Of course I refused at first. But he said this Genesis Dew concerned the rise and survival of the Aureate Way. Only then did I agree."
"Morgana and Master Wellspring both went still.
Neither of them had expected this. Tens of thousands of years ago, had someone already known what would happen now?"
"Ancestor, the Aureate Heir has the Aureate Codex and needs the Genesis Dew to rebuild his body. Then why did you stop me?"
Master Wellspring asked it with no way to make the question sound simple.
The old man in white smiled faintly. "If he truly carries the Aureate Codex, then let him take the spiritual water himself. No one can do it in his place."
Master Wellspring stared at the old man in white, then lowered his eyes to the jade phial in his arms. For a moment, he could neither advance nor retreat.
"Morganaβs brows drew tight as well. A sharp light crossed her amber eyes, but she did not let it break loose.
She understood. The old man was not making things difficult for the sake of it. He was holding the line he had been told to guard."
"Ancestor, the Aureate Heir has only a wisp of soul left. He does not even have a body. How is he supposed to take the spiritual water? Are you not forcing the impossible on him?"
Master Wellspringβs voice trembled. Each word pressed forward too hard to stay steady.
The old man in white only smiled faintly. His fly-whisk shifted with a light sweep, and his tone neither rushed nor slowed. "If he truly carries the Aureate Codex, if he truly is the hope of the Aureate Way, then there will certainly be a way.
I am only following the rules. When that venerable predecessor entrusted this Primordial Sanctuary to me, he once said, 'Only the heir of the Aureate Codex may personally take away the spiritual water. No one else may do it for him.' I have guarded this place for 38 thousand years. I cannot let the rule be broken in his hands."
Master Wellspring opened his mouth, still trying to say something, but the jade phial in his arms cut him off.
A faint but steady voice came from inside the jade phial. "Master Wellspring, let me out. I will try."
The voice was light, as soft as a whisper passing through the wind, but every word carried a force that allowed no argument.
"Master Wellspring lowered his head and looked at the jade phial in his arms. The violet soul within the phial flickered once.
The glow was dim, almost swallowed by the glassy jade around it, yet it carried a hard refusal to go out."
"Aureate Heir, but you..." Master Wellspring stopped there, caught between the words he wanted to say and the one order he had just been given.
"Jared had only a wisp of soul left. He could not even circulate the most basic spiritual power properly.
How could he possibly take the spiritual water?"
"The mist inside this Primordial Sanctuary was threaded with fragments of the Law of Chaos.
An ordinary spirit would not last long in it. In only a few moments, that mist could eat through it and scatter it completely."
"Master Wellspring could not set aside that single possibility.
If anything happened to the Aureate Heir out there, there would be no taking it back."
"Master Wellspring, let me out."
"Jared's voice sounded again.
This time, every word landed steadier than before. ""I didn't get this far because of luck. Since Ancestor has spoken of rules, then I'll follow the rules. Let me out."""
