"Morgana stood in the void and watched them leave.
Only then did she let out a long breath."
"Her face had gone white as paper.
There was not a trace of color in her lips, and cold sweat slid down her forehead and along her cheek."
Using the Nightfox apparition twice in a row had worsened her injuries again.
But she could not fall.
"She still had to go back.
She still had to see Jared rebuild his body."
By the time Morgana and Master Wellspring returned to Beastmoor Ridge, the sky had already gone dark.
Three blazing suns sank slowly beneath the horizon, staining the whole sky gold and red.
Across Beastmoor Ridge, lamps lit one after another, like stars scattered through the mountains.
"In the forecourt before Thornwild Palace, Beastfolk Warriors and cultivators of every kin moved everywhere at once.
Some reinforced the defenses. Some hauled supplies. Some spoke in low voices, keeping their words tight and close."
"When Morgana and Master Wellspring came back, everyone stopped what they were doing.
One by one, their gazes settled on the jade casket in Master Wellspring's arms."
"No one spoke.
But every pair of eyes seemed to be waiting for a miracle while bracing for the worst."
"Morgana did not stop.
She crossed the square directly and headed for the side hall."
"Master Wellspring followed close behind her.
He held the jade casket tight against him, as if he were carrying the most precious thing in the world."
"The door to the side hall was pushed open, and a faint fragrance drifted out to meet them.
Inside the hall, soft beast hides had already been spread over the sunstone couch.
Beside the couch, on the stone dais, two things had been placed and waiting."
"One was a length of black wood.
It was black from end to end, its surface covered in fine golden patterns, and a nether light seeped quietly from it."
"The other was the jade basin.
It had already been filled with spirit-spring water drawn from the depths of Beastmoor Ridge's spirit-vein. The water was clear all the way to the bottom, rich with spiritual power."
Elderheart Soulwood.
"It was the relic Jared had nearly died again and again to obtain in the Elder Soulborn Forest.
It was also the indispensable core needed to rebuild his body."
"Master Wellspring walked to the sunstone couch and set the jade casket down with extreme care.
Then he opened the lid."
"The luminous cocoon lay quietly inside the jade casket.
Its purple-gold light stood out sharply in the dim side hall, washing the whole place in a warm glow."
"Morgana walked to the stone dais and picked up that length of Elderheart Soulwood.
She examined it closely for a moment. Under the spiritual light, the golden patterns on the Soulwood moved slowly, as if the wood itself were breathing.
She said softly, ""Begin."""
"Master Wellspring drew in a deep breath.
His hands trembled slightly as he lifted the luminous cocoon from the jade casket and gently placed it into the jade basin."
"The luminous cocoon hovered above the spirit-spring water.
Its purple-gold glow intertwined with the clear light of the spring water, shimmering like the lake's surface under first light."
"Morgana placed the Elderheart Soulwood into the jade basin.
The Soulwood sank beneath the water and slowly dissolved, breaking apart into countless tiny golden motes that drifted through the spirit-spring water like fireflies."
"Those golden motes seemed almost alive.
They gathered toward the luminous cocoon, clinging to its surface and covering it layer by layer."
"The luminous cocoon began to change.
At first, it had been nothing but a mass of light. Now fine lines emerged across its surface, like the meridians of a human body, and like cracks spreading through the earth."
"Those lines spread outward from the center of the luminous cocoon.
Each one gave off a faint glow and a gentle heat."
"Master Wellspring knelt beside the jade basin.
His hands pressed together, and his lips kept trembling."
"His eyes were rimmed red, and tears gathered there, circling without falling.
He did not let them drop. He did not dare disturb the Aureate Heir."
Morgana stood to the side, her white robes like snow, her long hair black as ink.
"Her gaze never once left the jade basin.
In her amber eyes, the light of the luminous cocoon burned in reflection."
"Her hand hung at her side, clenched into a fist.
Her nails dug into her palm, yet no pain reached her."
The luminous cocoon hovered in the jade basin for three full days and three nights.
On the first day, the outline of bones appeared across the surface of the luminous cocoon.
"One by one, they took shape, white as jade and hard as steel.
