Alden sighed and was about to answer.
Jared spoke first.
"I will try."
His voice was quiet.
His tone made it sound as ordinary as saying he was going out to buy something.
Alden froze.
So did Rowan.
For a few seconds, the courtyard held no sound except the rustling leaves of the spirit tree.
"Mr. Chance, what did you say?"
Alden's eyes went wide, and he sprang up from his wicker chair. "You want to hunt a Golden Immortal Level Seven demon hound king?"
"Yes." Jared nodded. "I want to test myself."
"No. No, absolutely not."
Alden waved both hands in a panic, his voice urgent enough to lose its composure. "Mr. Chance, I know you are powerful. Rowan told me everything. You killed thirteen demon hounds by yourself, including a peak Golden Immortal Level Five elite, and every kill took one sword.
"But Golden Immortal Level Seven and Golden Immortal Level Five are worlds apart.
"Each level is a gulf. It is not only a difference in spiritual power. It is a difference in law comprehension, endurance, and capacity. Strong swordsmanship alone cannot bridge that gap.
"Hunting the demon hound king is too dangerous."
"I know," Jared said calmly. "But I need resources. A Golden Immortal Level Seven demon hound king is worth at least one million high-grade crystals. With that much, I can raise my cultivation faster."
He did not bother explaining more.
From Clearwind Village to Bermu City, he had already learned the basic price of resources in the Nineteenth Firmament.
Here, a Golden Immortal cultivator needed several times more resources than in the Eighteenth Firmament to break through quickly.
If he relied only on hunting Golden Immortal Level Five demon beasts, wealth would come too slowly.
Alden's expression shifted several times.
His brows tightened, relaxed, then tightened again. He was clearly weighing the risks.
At last, he sighed. The tension in his shoulders loosened.
"Mr. Chance, if you insist, I cannot stop you. But please, be careful. If the hunt turns impossible, do not force it. As long as you live, there will always be another chance."
Jared nodded.
"Captain Rowan, I need a few people who know the roads."
He turned to Rowan. "You are familiar with demon hound territory. Come with me."
Rowan clenched his teeth and nodded hard.
"All right. I will go with you."
He then selected the same nine cultivators who had hunted demon hounds with him the day before.
The nine men exchanged a quick look.
None of them refused.
Ten people, plus Jared and Gwendolyn.
Twelve in total.
Alden walked them to the village entrance. Worry filled his old eyes as he stood beside the crooked wooden fence and reminded them again and again to be careful.
Mountain wind passed through the unfinished spirit fields and lifted the gray-white hair at his temples.
The group went to Bermu City and stayed there for one night.
Early the next morning, Jared brought Rowan and the others to the intelligence market.
To hunt a Golden Immortal Level Seven demon hound, accurate intelligence was necessary.
He simply walked toward the Abyssal Exchange.
Rowan followed with questions filling his head, but he did not dare ask.
He thought of the private guesses he and the nine cultivators had exchanged the previous night.
What was Mr. Chance's background?
Some guessed he was a disciple of a major sect sent out to gain experience. Others thought he might be the direct disciple of some hidden master. Someone even wondered if he was an immortal from a higher realm punished and sent down to the Nineteenth Firmament.
No matter which guess was right, one thing was clear.
This young Golden Immortal Level One cultivator was not some blank newcomer.
The Abyssal Exchange stood in the central district of Bermu City.
It was a silver-white tower built from spirit crystal and spatial darkjade. Under the sun, it flashed with bright, almost blinding light.
The tower had nine floors.
Spatial sigils covered the outer walls of every floor. They were not defensive sigils, but cross-firmament message arrays and stabilizing arrays for spatial passages.
In other words, the tower itself was a small spatial hub.
A void pearl more than ten feet wide hovered above the spire. It was the symbol of the Abyssal Exchange and one of the key nodes that kept Bermu City's spatial laws stable.
At the foot of the stairs, Rowan already felt his legs weaken.
Looking up at the tower, he felt like an ant standing at the entrance of a dragon's den.
Two guards in silver-white robes stood at the door.
Both were Golden Immortal Level Five.
Their gazes were sharp, their auras stable and fierce. They were on a completely different level from the guards at the city gate.
Anyone who approached was scanned by their spirit sense. Several wandering cultivators tried to slip inside, but as soon as they stepped onto the stairs, an invisible barrier threw them back and sent them crashing into the street, drawing laughter from the crowd.
