Aureon's gaze passed over the six people still standing, and amusement curved one corner of his mouth.
"Oh? A few of you still have some backbone. Good. I admire people with courage. But are you sure you want to remain on your feet?"
Skylar ignored him.
Instead, he turned slightly toward Jared and spoke quietly. "Jared, what are you going to do?"
"I'll die before I surrender."
Jared answered without raising his voice. "If you choose to surrender, that's your decision. I won't interfere."
Skylar suddenly smiled.
There was something in that smile Jared rarely saw, almost like relief, or the calm of someone who had finally made a decision.
"You think I'm a coward? Like hell I'm surrendering to the celestials."
He gave Jared one long look. Complicated light moved through his cold eyes before he turned to Josephine.
"Josephine. We're leaving."
The moment he finished speaking, Skylar raised one hand. Teal-black flames gathered in his palm and sharpened into a blade that ripped open the space beside him.
Deep spatial turbulence surged inside the crack with a low howl.
Before anyone could react, Skylar grabbed Josephine and stepped straight into the fissure.
The opening sealed behind them.
Both figures vanished completely.
It happened so fast they might never have been there at all.
Jared stared at the closed fissure, momentarily stunned.
Five seconds passed in silence.
Then he swore, anger completely undisguised in his voice, along with a faint sense of loss he did not even recognize in himself.
"Fuck!"
The curse echoed through the air alongside the last ripples left by the closing fissure, a faint sigh beneath the overwhelming golden light.
Jared had never imagined Skylar would actually run in the end.
He had thought the bastard had enough backbone to stay and fight beside him.
Apparently, Jared had given him too much credit.
Aureon narrowed his eyes slightly.
Aureon made no move to chase them. Two escaping insects were not worth interrupting what he had come here to do.
The man worth killing was the one standing before himβJared, the Aureate Way cultivator who wielded chaotic force, had killed Grand Elder Greenwood, and had destroyed every celestial faction in the Nineteenth Firmament.
Once Jared died, the opportunists still watching from the sidelines would lose the figure holding them together.
Jared drew a deep breath and forced his emotions down.
Then he turned toward Master Veridian.
The older man stood several steps behind him. At some point, another dry blade of grass had found its way between Master Veridian's lips, but the usual irreverence had vanished from his cloudy eyes. Only a difficult, complicated emotion remained.
"Master Veridian, take the kid and go."
Jared's voice was calm, almost as though he were assigning an ordinary errand. "They're not here for you. There's no reason for you to stay and die."
