Kael rose. His spiritual energy had recovered to roughly half its capacity. He remained far from full strength, but at least he could move normally.
He closed one fist and felt power circulating through his meridians once again. Then he looked up at Jared. "My sister is still in the plaza."
Jared's violet eyes remained completely still. "I know."
"I can't abandon her.
"She is my sister. Saving her is the reason I came here." His voice carried an almost stubborn resolve.
"Returning now will only make her situation worse."
Jared spoke calmly, but an unquestionable chill entered his tone. "You cannot defeat the three elders or Damian.
"If you return, they will capture you again and gain another bargaining chip. You will fail to save Mira and throw away your own life."
Kael's lips moved as he searched for an objection, only to realize none existed.
Kael could find no falsehood in Jared's argument.
In his current condition, Kael had less than 30 percent of his full combat strength. Going back would mean death.
"I promise that I will find a way to save your sister," Jared continued, his voice softening without losing its certainty.
"For now, we have to leave.
"Only by returning to the depths of the Void Sea can we plan properly. If we stay here, all we can do is wait to die."
Kael was silent for a long time.
He looked through the gap in the window toward the outline of the plaza swallowed by night.
Somewhere in that direction, his 17-year-old sister remained bound to a pillar while the realm's laws steadily consumed her vitality.
His hands closed until his nails dug into his palms, then slowly relaxed.
"All right," he said hoarsely, forcing down his anguish and resentment. "I'll go with you."
Jared acknowledged him with a nod and offered no further reply.
He approached the three men and raised both hands. Gray chaotic force poured from his palms and formed a denser radiance around them.
It was thicker and more closely woven than before, sealing every trace of their Water Clan auras inside.
"From this point onward, you must imitate the way human cultivators walk. Release no Water Clan spiritual energy and display none of your people's traits.
"The light around your arms will conceal your auras, but you must also control every fluctuation of power inside you."
Kael, Neris, and Riven nodded together.
They rose, followed Jared, and climbed through the inn's rear window.
