I was still trying to make sense of it–still stuck on that question, turning it over in my head.

Then my gaze snapped back through the crack in the door.

Alexander had gone still.

His head turned slightly toward the door.

Toward me.

My breath caught.

He knew I was there.

Of course he did.

A law, restless energy stirred deep inside me.

My wolf, Nova.

Go in, Nova snapped. They’re talking about you like you’re not even in the house.

My fingers curled slightly against the door.

I didn’t move.

He could call me in.

Part of me almost wanted him to.

Let him, Nova pushed, her tone rising. Let him call you in. Or better yet, walk in yourself. Put them in their

place.

My jaw tightened,

That would be a mistake.

A huge one.

“I can’t,” I muttered under my breath, barely audible even to myself.

You won’t, Nova corrected, irritated now. There’s a difference.

I haven’t felt her this angry in a long time.

I swallowed, forcing my eyes back to Alexander.

He still hadn’t spoken.

Hadn’t called me.

For a second, I held my breath-

Waiting.

Hoping.

Not because I wanted to go in,

but because if he called me, I wouldn’t have to choose.

It wouldn’t be on me.

He turned away.

Relief.

Coward, Nova hissed.

“I’m not,” I whispered, my grip tightening slightly against the door. “You know I’m not.”

Then go in.

“No.”

My voice was firmer this time.

They’re calling us unstable.

I flinched slightly at that.

“I know.”

The words felt bitter in my mouth.

I could feel it.

Everything lately-

“If I go in there right now,” I murmured, my voice low and strained, “you know what could happen.”

“They’re not completely wrong,” I added quietly. “Not right now.”

There was a shift in the room.

Small.

But enough.

Mathias leaned forward again.

“That’s not the point-”

“It is exactly the point,” Titus cut in, sharper this time. “You are building a case on speculation.”

The tension spiked.

Voices started to rise.

Not loud yet-

but heading there.

I could feel it building.

Inside the room.

Inside me.

This is your moment, Nova pushed again. Go in.

I didn’t move.

Didn’t trust myself to.

Because the truth was-

If I stepped into that room right now, I wouldn’t just be defending myself.

I might prove them right.

The word cut through everything.

The room went still almost immediately.

“I’ve heard what you all had to say,” he said.

“And now,” he continued, “you will listen to me.”

Silence.

No one interrupted.

“First,” he said, his gaze shifting briefly across the table, “I am aware that Roman’s presence makes a

number of you… uncomfortable.”

That was putting it lightly.

“However,” he went on, “you do not need to concern yourselves with Roman or his wolf.”

His voice remained calm.

“He is not only under my protection,” Alexander said, “he is my ward.”

A slight shift in the room.

“And more importantly,” he added, “he is my trainee.”

That landed.

The way a few of them exchanged looks.

Because that meant something.

It meant Roman wasn’t just someone passing through.

He was being shaped.

Trained.

By the Alpha himself. No one could challenge that, even if they wanted to.

“I take full responsibility for him,” Alexander finished. “He will not be a threat to this pack.”

There was no room for argument in that.

“And as for the concerns regarding the Luna…”

Nova stirred, alert.

I held still… waiting.

“I am aware of the incident during training,” he said.

No attempt to twist it.

“I regret what happened.”

My throat tightened slightly.

He turned his head slightly toward Tessa.

“Inform Ethan to see me tomorrow.”

Tessa nodded.

And then-

Alexander looked at Mathias.

“What you have said,” Alexander continued, “is a serious allegation.”

Mathias straightened slightly in his seat.

That instinctive reaction-

like he knew he had crossed a line.

“So I have to take it seriously,” Alexander added.

There was a pause.

“You must provide concrete proof to support your claims that the Luna is unstable and dangerous to the

pack…”

Mathias leaned forward slightly.

“I…”

He didn’t get far.

“I am not done,” Alexander cut in.

Mathias stopped.

And then-

“Until then, you’re suspended from the council,” Alexander said.

Mathias’s expression shifted immediately, something flashing across his face–shock, anger, disbelief- but he didn’t get the chance to speak again.

Because Alexander wasn’t finished.

“And the next time,” he continued, his gaze sweeping across the entire room now, “you feel the need to hold a council meeting so private that the Alpha is not invited-”

His jaw tightened.

“-you might want to consider taking it outside the pack house. Do not test me like this again.”
