A Warrior's Second Chance (Faye and Alexander) novel Chapter 390

Chapter 390

FAYE

I hadn’t meant to stop outside the council chamber.

At least, that was what I told myself.

I had followed Alexander without really thinking. But before I realized it, I was standing just outside the

partially closed doors of the council chamber.

The door hadn’t fully latched.

It was left slightly open.

Just enough for voices to carry.

Just enough for me to see inside.

At first, I only meant to glance in.

Just once.

Just enough to see why Alexander had come here in such a hurry.

But then I heard-

And then the Luna.”

I froze.

My fingers tightened slightly at my sides as my eyes lifted through the narrow opening in the door.

I could have walked in right then.

D

The moment I realized they were talking about me, I could have pushed the door open and forced every

one of them to say it to my face.

Part of me wanted to.

Badly.

But I didn’t.

I stayed where I was.

Hidden behind the cracked door.

Listening.

Alexander’s voice came low and even.

What about the Luna?

< Chapter 390

Tessa shifted in her seat before answering.

We heard the Luna was not in a good place as far as her health is concerned.”

I frowned.

Health?

I watched Alexander lift a brow slightly, like he was about to respond.

But Mathias cut in before he could.

I think what Elder Tessa is struggling to explain,he said, leaning forward with the kind of confidence only

men like him ever seemed to have, is that we all know the Luna has been unstable lately.

The word hit me hard.

Unstable.

My stomach tightened.

Inside the room, Alexander didn’t move.

But I knew him well enough to see the change in him anyway.

It was in the way his shoulders went just a little still.

The way the air around him shifted.

Mathias kept going.

Which means we may have two unstable wolves roaming among us during the full-

He didn’t get to finish.

It happened so fast I almost missed it.

One second, Alexander was sitting.

The next-

He moved.

The chair shoved back violently behind him as he surged to his feet, the sound echoing sharply through

the room.

A low growl tore through the chamber, so deep it made the hairs on my arms stand up.

For one terrifying second, it looked like he was going straight across that table.

Straight for Mathias.

My breath caught.

Even from outside the room, I felt it-

< Chapter 390

That sudden, violent burst of his wolf.

Aiden.

Raw.

Mathias jerked back in his chair so quickly his hand hit the table.

The smugness vanished from his face instantly.

And for the first time since I started listening-

He looked afraid.

Alexander stopped himself.

Barely.

I could see it in the tension in his body.

The effort it took.

The way his hand tightened against the edge of the table as he forced himself back under control.

Silence swallowed the room.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Mathias cleared his throat quickly, trying to recover what little dignity he had left.

My apologies, Alpha.”

His voice was thinner now.

More careful.

But even from where I stood, I could tell he wasn’t truly sorry.

He was just smart enough to know he had pushed too far.

Still, he kept going.

Because apparently that wasn’t enough for him.

But the concern remains,” he said. We have all heard what has been happening.

Kyle’s voice came from behind Alexander.

What exactly are you referring to?

Mathias glanced at him, then back at Alexander.

The training field,he said. We all heard what happened there.

My chest tightened instantly.

No.

We heard the Luna nearly had Tessa’s son, Ethan, maimed during training.

Heat rushed into my face.

I stared through the opening in the door, suddenly unable to look away.

I hated hearing it said like that.

Hated how ugly it sounded when someone else said it aloud.

Because no matter what the truth was-

I had lost control.

And everyone knew it.

Mathias paused, letting that sit.

Then he delivered the next blow.

And we also heard,” he said more quietly, that she tried to drown herself earlier today.

My breath caught.

The room went still.

And so did I.

The words didn’t sit right.

Not just what they saidbut how they said it.

Like it was fact.

Like it was something they knew, not something they had heard in passing.

My brows drew together slightly as I stared through the crack in the door, my focus slipping away from the

room for a second.

How did they know that?

The training ground was one thing. There had been people there. Witnesses. That was never going to stay

quiet.

But this morning?

That wasn’t supposed to leave the room.

It had been in our chambers.

Just me and Alexander.

And then Dr. Adams.

That was it.

No one else.

I shifted slightly where I stood, my fingers resting against the edge of the door as my thoughts started turning over themselves.

Dr. Adams.

I frowned faintly.

No.

That didn’t sit right.

She talked sometimes, yesbut not like that. Not about something like this. Not about anything that

happened inside the Alpha’s chambers.

She wouldn’t risk it.

No one would.

Not unless they were stupid.

And she wasn’t.

So how-

My jaw tightened slightly.

Then where did it come from?

I glanced back into the room again, my eyes moving across their faces.

Mathias looked too sure of himself.

Too settled.

Not like someone passing along a rumor.

And that was what bothered me.

If it was gossip, there would be hesitation.

There would be doubt.

But there was none of that.

He said it like it had been told to him.

Clearly.

Directly.
