“What is it?”

The question came out immediately, my grip loosening the second she reacted.

Then it hit me.

Her wrist.

I couldn’t.

“Why are you staring at it like that?” she added, letting out a small laugh. “Your face is too serious.”

That laugh-

It didn’t match what I was seeing.

“It can’t be,” I muttered under my breath, more to myself than to her.

I shook my head slightly, forcing out a small smirk like I could brush it off.

“I must be more exhausted than I thought.”

Faye frowned faintly.

“What is it?”

I hesitated for half a second.

Then I pointed at her wrist, my tone more careful now.

“That doesn’t look like irritation,” I said.

She looked down at it briefly, then back at me.

“It looks like a mark,” I said.

A pause…

“Stonevale’s mark.”

For a second, she just stared at me.

Then-

She laughed.

Actually laughed.

“You and Roman must be spending too much time together,” she said

My brows pulled together.

“What does that mean?”

“He said the same thing this morning,” she replied easily. “When he saw it”

That didn’t help

If anything, it made it worse.

Because that meant I wasn’t the only one seeing it.

“Wait, did you say Roman said the same thing?” I asked.

Faye sighed as if she was bored and said yes.

“How does Roman know the Stonevale mark?”

As if Faye read my mind, she began to explain, “He said he saw it on Jeffery, Irene’s mate.”

Oh. That makes sense.

But she-

She clearly wasn’t seeing it.

“It’s just my skin reacting to something,” she added, like it was obvious, already pulling her hand away

from mine. “You’re both overthinking it.”

She stepped back slightly.

“Come on, we shouldn’t keep Helen waiting. Let’s go get this over and done with.”

No.

I reached for her again, pulling her back before she could move too far.

“Hold on.”

My eyes dropped to her wrist again, studying it more closely this time.

There was no mistake.

I looked back up at her.

“I’m serious,” I said. “That’s a mark.”

A pause.

“You can’t tell me you’re not seeing that.”

Her expression didn’t change.

“I’m not joking either,” she replied.

Frustration flickered briefly in my chest.

“How do you just assume something that specific,” she continued, “and expect me to take you seriously?

How are you sure…”

“Seriously?” I said.

I’ve studied most of the pack marks–across this region and beyond…as expected of an Alpha.

She should know that.

ROMAN

I stepped into the living room after I was done arranging the office.

My eyes landed on the woman first.

She was seated…calm, composed. There was something about her presence that didn’t need explanatic

It simply filled the space.

Alpha Alexander and the Luna weren’t there.

I paused for half a second before I forced myself to move forward.

“Good day,” I greeted.

Simple.

Respectful.

She turned her head slightly toward me and gave a small nod.

Casual.

Almost indifferent.

But then her gaze lingered.

Just a little too long.

Something shifted in her expression, like she had just placed something she had been searching for.

“Are you Roman?” she asked.

I froze.

Not outwardly.

But inside–completely.

The way she said it.

Like she already knew.

Like she had no reason to ask unless she was confirming something she was already certain about.

My throat tightened slightly.

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I hadn’t expected that.

Not from her.

Not from someone I had never met.

Before I could respond-

“Mom.”

Alpha Alexander’s voice cut through the space from behind me.

My head turned almost instantly.

Mom?

The word didn’t register fully at first.

Not until I looked back at her again.

And everything fell into place.

The familiarity.

The presence.

The way she carried herself without needing to prove anything.

I had seen her before… no wonder I thought she was a bit familiar.

I remembered when Irene and Jeffery had come around the first time.

She had been there.

Just… not in a way that made her memorable enough for me to connect immediately.

Now it clicked.

Alpha Alexander’s mother.

I exhaled slowly, the tension easing just slightly as I lowered my head in a small, respectful nod.

I didn’t speak.

There was no need to.

Instead, I turned slightly toward Alpha Alexander.

“Welcome back, Alpha,” I said.

He responded briefly–something I registered but didn’t dwell on.

I stepped back instinctively.

Just enough to create space.

Just enough to not be in the way.

They didn’t need me here.

So I inclined my head once more, turned, and quietly walked away.
