Chapter 404
FAYE
By the time I stepped into the living room, I had already prepared myself.
Or at least… I thought I had.
The moment I saw them standing there–Alexander and Helen… I wondered all over again.
So it was true.
He had gone to her.
And now she was here.
With him.
I slowed slightly as I approached, my gaze flicking between them without making it too obvious. My mind
was already running ahead, piecing things together, filling in gaps that hadn’t been explained yet.
A familiar tension crept up my spine, subtle but present. Not explosive like before.
I pushed it down.
Forced my expression to remain neutral as I stepped closer.
“Helen,” I said, directing it to her.
My voice came out calm.
Even.
Like I wasn’t standing there, trying not to read too much into everything at once.
Helen looked at me, and for a second, something I couldn’t place passed through her eyes before she
responded.
“Hello, Faye. You look well.”
No warmth.
But no hostility either.
Hmm…
It somehow made it more awkward.
We weren’t on those terms anymore.
Not after everything.
Not after things had gotten… complicated.

So there were no hugs.
No attempts to close the distance.
Just that space between us, filled with things neither of us said.
I could feel Alexander watching me.
Waiting.
Then, without making any comments, he stepped closer and gently took my arm.
“Give us a moment,” he said to Helen.
She didn’t argue.
Didn’t question it:
Just gave a small nod.
And that was that.

Alexander guided me away before I could say anything else. We walked out of the living room and toward
the stairs.
Neither of us spoke.
Not on the way up.
Not as we reached our door.
Not even as he pushed it open and let me walk in first.
The moment we stepped inside, the door closing behind us, everything became silent.
I turned to face him.
Slowly.
Then folded my arms across my chest-
And waited.
ALEXANDER
I didn’t rush into it.
For a moment, I just looked at her.
Arms folded. Waiting. Watching me like she already knew there was something I needed to explain–and she wasn’t going to make it easy for me to avoid it.

exhaled lightly and started somewhere safe.
“How was your day?” I asked.
The question hung there for a second before she reacted.
Then she let out a short laugh, shaking her head slightly.
“That’s funny,” she said, her tone light. “I feel like I should be the one asking you that.”
I raised a brow faintly.
“Oh?”
“You’re the one who disappeared,” she continued, gesturing loosely, “and then came back with the great Helen Blackwell.”
There was a small pause, then she added-

If anything, it sharpened just a little.
“You could have told me,” she said.
Her voice wasn’t raised.
But it didn’t need to be.

“That’s all I’m saying,” she added. “How many times do we have to fight over this for you to understand that I like to be consulted before decisions are made about my own life?”
