Roman’s body was still caught in the strain of it-halfway between control and losing it completely.
The shift pressed harder against him, forcing its way through despite the resistance he tried to hold onto. His grip on the table tightened, his breathing uneven, his focus slipping in and out as the pressure built.
And then he heard it.
“Roman.”
The voice came calm.
It settled into him, steady and sure, like it had always been there.
“Don’t fight it.”
Roman didn’t question the voice at that moment.
He wasn’t in a place to.
His mind wasn’t clear enough to think, to doubt, to wonder where it came from or why it sounded the way
it did.
He just… felt it.
Felt the weight of it.
Felt the ease in it.
And something in him responded.
The resistance in his body slowed… loosening, like he was being guided through it instead of crushed by
Then another voice echoed.
“Roman.”
This one was different.
More grounded
More urgent
“Roman.”
Again.
That one broke through
Roman snapped out of it

The pressure didn’t vanish completely, but it dropped fast enough for him to regain himself.
His chest rose sharply as he dragged in a breath, his eyes flickering as the gold faded, settling back to
normal.
The room came back into focus.
Clear…real.
And standing there…
Beta Cole.
Roman was watching him.
Concern written plainly across his face.
Roman straightened almost immediately, pushing himself upright like nothing had happened.
“Beta,” he said quickly, his voice steadier than he felt.
Then his gaze followed Cole’s.
Down.
To the table.
Roman’s hand was still resting against it.
And where his fingers had been gripping-
Deep marks were cut into the wood.
Definitely claw marks.
Cole was already moving before Roman could say anything else.
But there was urgency in it.
He closed the distance in a few steps, his eyes scanning Roman quickly his face, his posture, his hands
before settling on him fully.
“What are you doing?” Cole asked, his voice low, almost hushed, like he didn’t want it canying beyond the
room
Roman’s breath hitched slightly as he tried to steady it
“I” he started.
He swallowed
“I didn’t mean to,” he said, the words coming out a little rough, a little rushed “I just

“I lost control.”
Cole’s expression hardened slightly at that.
“Lost control?” he repeated, quieter now, but more serious.
His eyes didn’t leave Roman’s face.
“Does the Alpha know about that?”
Roman shook his head quickly.
“Not fully.”
That answer didn’t seem to sit well with Cole.
Roman saw it immediately.
And before Cole could say anything else-
“Please,” Roman added, the word coming out fast. “Don’t mention it to him yet.”
Cole’s brows pulled together faintly.
“I’ll tell him,” Roman continued, trying to steady his voice. “I’d rather be the one to tell him about it.”
Cole held his gaze for a second longer, then slowly raised a hand.
Not dismissive.
Just enough to show he understood.
“Fine.”
The word came with a small nod, like he was allowing it-for now.
Then his expression shifted slightly.
“Speaking of the Alpha,” Cole added, his tone returning to something more neutral, where is he?
Roman didn’t hesitate
“I’m not sure,” he said quickly “But he should be in his chambers
Cole studied him for a brief moment
Roman didn’t wait
“Welcome back, Beta,” he added already stepping back
And before anything else could be said
Roman slipped away quickly

ROMAN
Just outside the dining room, I slowed.
Not because I meant to.
My steps just… lost their rhythm.

For a second, I stood there, staring ahead without really seeing anything, my mind dragging me back to what had just happened in there.
The way it felt.
My hand flexed slightly at my side, like it still remembered the pressure.
I exhaled slowly, running it through my head again.
And then…
Helen’s words came back to me.
That was what I was getting worked up over before my wolf kicked in.
Could it be a sign?
