A Warrior's Second Chance (Faye and Alexander) novel Chapter 454

Chapter 454

THIRD POV

The walk to Helen’s room felt longer than it actually was.

Alexander moved through the quiet hallway with measured steps, keeping calm as always, but there was tension sitting heavily across his shoulders.

By the time he reached Helen’s door, he slowed.

Then stopped.

For a brief moment, he simply stood there staring at the wood in front of him.

His jaw flexed faintly.

This suddenly felt ridiculous.

Not the reason he came.

Just… the actual act of doing it.

Standing outside his own mother’s room, trying to figure out how to begin a conversation, felt strangely harder than anything he’d done before.

Alexander exhaled quietly through his nose before finally lifting his hand and knocking.

He knocked once.

Then silence followed.

He waited.

Nothing.

No response.

He stared at the door another second before slowly nodding to himself.

Fine.

That settled it.

Maybe she was asleep already.

Or maybe she simply didn’t want to answer the door.

Either option gave him an excuse to leave this awkward attempt behind without having to actually

Honestly, part of him was relieved.

Good.

He had changed his mind anyway.

This entire talk suddenly felt unnecessary.

What exactly was he supposed to say?

Thank you for risking your life for my mate?

Sorry we spent years barely agreeing on anything?

He already knew neither one of them handled emotional conversations well.

It would only become uncomfortable halfway through before one of them shut down again. Or

start a fight.

So maybe this was better.

Alexander turned immediately, already prepared to walk away.

Then suddenly, the door opened behind him.

“Alexander?”

Helen’s voice carried clear surprise.

And exhaustion too.

Like she had either been asleep already or was about to be.

Alexander stopped mid-step.

For a second, he just stood there with his back partially turned before slowly facing her again.

Helen stood in the doorway wearing a loose dark robe, one hand still resting lightly against the doorframe. Her hair wasn’t fully done the way it usually was during the day, and somehow that alone made her seem less untouchable for once.

More human.

The surprise remained in her eyes as she looked at him.

Clearly, she hadn’t expected him outside her room at this hour.

Alexander opened his mouth slightly.

Then closed it again.

to say anymore.

Helen watched him for another moment before speaking first.

“Come inside.”

It wasn’t really a question.

Alexander hesitated briefly.

Then gave a small nod and stepped past her into the room.

Helen quietly shut the door behind him.

Alexander remained standing for a second before Helen moved toward the bed and sat down

slowly near the edge of it.

Naturally, Alexander chose the couch opposite her instead.

The distance between them wasn’t large.

But it was noticeable.

Helen waited calmly.

Watching him.

Clearly expecting him to finally explain why he was here.

Alexander rubbed his hands together once slowly before leaning forward slightly.

Right.

He had to say something now.

“I just…” he started quietly before pausing again.

This already felt awkward.

He forced himself to continue anyway.

“I came to check on you.”

Helen’s expression didn’t change.

Alexander looked briefly away before continuing.

“To see how you are holding up,” he clarified. “And if there are still any other arrangements that need to be put in place before tomorrow.”

There…

Practical… safe.

That sounded normal enough.

At least that was what he hoped.

But even as the words left his mouth, it was obvious he sounded off.

Like someone trying very hard to sound unaffected.

Helen noticed immediately.

Of course she did.

She had known him his entire life.

She could probably read through him better than anyone else despite how complicated their

relationship had been over the years.

She stayed quiet for another moment.

Watching him carefully.

And suddenly, Alexander became aware of how tense he looked sitting there.

His hands still loosely clasped together.

His shoulders tight.

Like he was bracing himself against something invisible.

Helen could see it too.

The effort.

The wall he was trying so hard to keep standing.

Finally, she spoke.

“How are you feeling?”

The question caught him completely off guard.

Alexander looked up at her immediately.

For a second, he genuinely didn’t know how to answer that.

Because he hadn’t actually thought about it himself.

He kept thinking about Faye.

About the ritual.

About preparations.

About strategy.

There was no time to stop and think about how he himself was feeling until Faye handed him that

letter tonight.

But still…

He wasn’t even sure he had the answer to the question.

So instinct answered for him instead, as always.

“I’m okay.”

The response came too fast.

Helen shook her head almost immediately, like she saw that one coming.

“No,” she said quietly. “You’re not.”

Alexander’s expression shifted faintly at that.

His eyes lifted fully to hers now.

And for a second-

Something in his face almost cracked.

Not fully.

Just enough to reveal the exhaustion underneath.

The fear, the strain.

Helen held his gaze steadily.

Then slowly, she stood up from the bed.
