Helen crossed the short distaen

them quietly before lowering herself onto the couch

beside Alexander.

Alexander remained still, his shoulders tense as he stared ahead, but then Helen slowly placed a

hand on his arm.

The contact made him stiffen almost immediately.

This wasn’t the first time Helen had done that, but it felt different this time around.

It felt unfamiliar.

Helen noticed the tension instantly but didn’t remove her hand.

Instead, she spoke quietly.

“Alex, you cannot possibly be okay right now.”

Alexander inhaled sharply.

Helen continued before he could respond.

“Not with everything you’re carrying.”

Something about the calmness in her voice made it unbearable somehow.

Alexander exhaled slowly through his nose before abruptly standing to his feet.

The movement was too quick. It was like he couldn’t take another second of this.

Like he physically needed distance before this conversation went somewhere he didn’t want it to

He moved a few steps away from the couch, one hand dragging briefly over the back of his neck.

“I said I’m fine,” he muttered.

The words sounded flatter now.

Less convincing.

Helen remained seated for only another second before standing as well.

She took slow steps toward him.

Alexander stayed where he was standing, his back partially turned, his shoulders rigid like he was

Then finally, she spoke again.

“You know what the saddest part is, Alexa

Her voice was calm now.

“You’ve been doing this for so long that you don’t even realize you’re doing it anymore.”

Alexander frowned faintly but didn’t answer.

Helen continued anyway.

“You learned how to swallow pain in silence as a child.”

He looked at Helen as she spoke.

“You were barely eight years old when you got attacked during training by boys older than you,” Helen said quietly. “I still remember how deep the injury on your shoulder was.

Alexander looked away immediately.

Of course she would remember that.

Helen remembered everything.

“You were bleeding badly,” she continued. “The healers wanted to stop the session immediately.”

A faint pause followed.

“But you refused.”

Alexander inhaled slowly through his nose.

Because he remembered that day too.

Unfortunately..

“You stood there trying not to cry because you didn’t want anyone to think you were weak,” Helen added. “You looked me in the face and told me you were fine while blood was running down your

arm.”

Alexander closed his eyes briefly.

He hated where this conversation was going already.

And somehow it only got worse when Helen added quietly,

“And instead of telling you it was okay to be hurt… I told you to toughen up.”

Alexander slowly looked at her again.

Helen’s expression didn’t change.

“I told myself I was preparing you,” shouted. “You were my only son. The future Alpha of Blood Crescent. Everything around you was politics, expectations, legacy.”

Her gaze lowered briefly.

“I thought softness would destroy you.”

The room felt quieter after that.

“Mom, stop all this…” Alexander said.

But Helen cut him off. “I might not have another chance after tonight. At least let me say all I have

to say.”

Alexander ran a hand through his hair.

“Then,” Helen continued, “when you were thirteen, your father started pushing harder.”

Alexander’s expression hardened faintly.

“That was the year you stopped coming to me whenever something upset you,” Helen said.

That one landed differently.

Because it was true.

Helen watched him carefully.

“You would come back bruised from training, exhausted from lessons, frustrated from expectations…” she continued. “And every single time I asked what was wrong, you gave me the

same answer.”

I’m fine.

The words practically echoed between them without being spoken aloud.

Helen let out a quiet breath.

“And every time you said it,” she added softly, “I let you.”

Alexander swallowed once.

His fingers flexed slightly at his sides.

“I believed pressure would make you stronger.”

A humorless breath nearly escaped Alexander at that.

Pressure.

That was one way to describe it.

“You were expected to lead warriors before you were even old enough to understand what

leadership actually cost,” Helen said. “Expected to control yourself constantly. Expected to endure

constantly.”

Her eyes settled fully on him again.

“And between both of us… somewhere along the line, we taught you that feeling things was

weakness.”

Helen took another small step closer.

“Then Diana happened.”

The moment her name entered the room, something in Alexander visibly stilled again.

“You lost your mate to your own father,” Helen said quietly. “And after that…”

She paused briefly.

“I watched something in you shut down completely.”

Alexander looked away immediately.

Everything after Diana became cold.

Something went numb after that.

Helen’s voice softened further.

“You stopped letting yourself care deeply about anything outside duty, power, strategy, survival… until Faye came along.”

Helen smiled faintly.

“The first time I saw you with her,” Helen continued quietly, “I realized she was bringing pieces of you back that I thought were gone forever.”

Alexander’s throat tightened faintly.

“She made you feel again,” Helen said. “She made you care beyond politics and your last name.”

Silence filled the room after that.

Then Helen looked directly at him and

caid quietly,

“And now tomorrow, you might lose her too.”

Alexander physically tensed at the words.

Immediately.

Like hearing it aloud made the possibility too real.

“And somehow,” Helen added softly, “you’re still standing here telling me you’re fine.”
