A Warrior's Second Chance (Faye and Alexander) novel Chapter 495

Chapter 493

Chapter 493

THIRD POV

The tension in the hall tightened further.

Then someone spoke from the far side of the council chamber.

Unlike the others, his attention was not fixed on Blood Crescent.

It was fixed on something else.

“I don’t know about the rest of you, but before we continue discussing Alexander Blackwell,” he said, “I want an answer regarding the wolf.”

The room quieted slightly.

Several elders immediately knew which wolf he meant.

The one whose howl had echoed across the sacred grounds.

The one who had appeared during the ritual.

The one who had thrown every Stonevale wolf into confusion and aimed directly for Darren.

The elder leaned forward.

“That was no ordinary wolf. And it wasn’t a stranger.”

A murmur spread through the hall.

“He is right,” another elder agreed.

“I felt it.”

“As did I.”

The voices came from different parts of the chamber now.

“That howl affected us all.”

“It felt like authority.”

The distinction settled heavily over the room.

One elder frowned.

“And no

the authority of an outsider.”

That immediately drew more attention.

Several heads nodded.

Every wolf present understood that truth.

An alpha from another pack could be intimidating.

Powerful.

Even overwhelming.

But what they had experienced during that howl had felt different.

Familiar… instinctive.

Like something buried deep inside their blood had reacted before their minds could.

“Who was that wolf?”

Darren felt genuine unease.

His expression did not change.

But inside, alarm flared immediately. The question wasn’t exactly directed at him, but still… he felt

attacked by it.

The last thing he needed was for the conversation to go in this direction.

The last thing he needed was for anyone to start entertaining impossible ideas.

Because once these wolves started looking for explanations, eventually someone would say

Roman’s name.

And if that happened, questions would follow.

Questions Darren had no intention of answering.

He folded his arms.

“We are wasting time discussing some wolf in the middle of a discussion about a coordinated

attack.”

“Some wolf?” one elder repeated sharply.

“We’re all elders here. We recognize the presence of our Alpha.

Darren immediately cut across the growing discussion.

“This is exactly why we are getting nowhere.”

His voice was firm enough to silence several people.

He couldn’t wait around for Roman’s name to actually come up.

So he shifted the focus deliberately.

The very thought irritated him.

Roman was dead.

Dead.

He had been telling himself that for weeks.

Even this morning, after everything that had happened, Darren had repeated it to himself more than once.

Roman is dead.

Roman is gone.

Roman cannot come back. He doesn’t even have a wolf.

Yet that howl continued to linger in his mind.

No.

Darren pushed the thought away immediately.

There were more important problems.

Real problems.

Problems standing directly in front of him.

And one of them was Janet.

If anyone was going to explain how an entire ritual had collapsed under her watch, it would be her.

If anyone was going to help him salvage what remained of this disaster, it would be her.

For years, Janet had always had an answer.

And right now, Darren desperately needed that.

“We are discussing wolves whose identities we do not know when there is someone directly involved in the ritual who should be answering questions.”

Several elders frowned.

“Bring Janet here,” Darren repeated.

Wyatt nodded immediately.

“Of course.”

Without another word, Wyatt turned and hurried out of the hall.

The large doors shut behind him.

Silence settled again.

The elders were still muttering among themselves.

Still exchanging dark looks.

Still whispering.

But Darren ignored them.

He stayed rigidly where he was.

Because whether the elders liked it or not, Janet was still the only person who understood the

ritual completely.

The only person who could tell him if everything was truly lost.

Minutes passed.

Then more.

The atmosphere inside the hall became increasingly uneasy.

Several elders had resumed their arguments.

Others sat quietly.

One elder tapped his fingers against the armrest impatiently.

“What’s taking so long?” he muttered.

Nobody answered.

Darren found himself staring at the doors.

Waiting.

A strange feeling had begun creeping into his chest.

Something felt wrong.

He couldn’t explain it.

He only knew that the longer Wyatt remained gone, the irritated he became.

Finally…

The doors burst open.

Several heads turned immediately.

Wyatt stumbled into the hall.

And the moment Darren saw him, something inside him dropped.

Wyatt looked terrified.

The color had drained from his face.

His breathing was uneven.

And for a brief second, Darren found himself staring.

Because he had known Wyatt a long time.

Long enough to know this wasn’t normal.

Long enough to know something had happened.

The hall quieted almost immediately.

Wyatt stopped just inside the entrance.

His eyes found Darren instantly.

Then stayed there.

The silence stretched.

“Darren…” Wyatt said.

His voice cracked.

The elders immediately noticed.

Darren’s stomach tightened.

“What is it?” he demanded.

Wyatt swallowed.

For a second, it looked as though he couldn’t force the words out.

Then finally..

“Janet is dead.”
