ROMAN

I stood on the porch alone, watching the morning stretch out quietly beyond the trees.

The air was cool, carrying that faint dampness that usually comes right before the sun fully settles in. Everything looked normal in a way that almost felt insulting.

Normal, as if nothing had changed.

As if I hadn’t changed.

I kept my hands resting on the railing, fingers curled lightly around the edge while my thoughts did what they had been doing since I woke up–refusing to settle.

There was a strange kind of stillness inside me.

Like my mind had finally caught up to everything it had been avoiding for too long and didn’t know where to land.

Behind me, the house was quiet. Everyone else was still inside, resting and recovering, giving the world a few more minutes before it demanded anything from them again.

I could feel someone approaching.

He came up beside me and stopped at the railing, resting his forearms against it the same way I was.

“Morning, Alpha,” I greeted.

“Morning,” he replied.

For a moment, he didn’t say another word. Neither did I.

We just looked out. Everything was awkward in a way.

The trees swayed slightly in the distance, branches shifting in slow rhythm with the wind.

“Roman, I wanted to thank you.”

I glanced at him briefly.

“For what?” I asked.

I stayed quiet.

“I’m glad she survived.”

It wasn’t all about me, and he knew it. Alpha Alexander had done his part too. Helen almost got herself killed in the process of reviving the Luna.

But I didn’t need to ruin the moment, so I just nodded once.

Alpha Alexander tilted his head slightly toward me.

“I owe you now. And I always pay up,” he said.

I didn’t reply this time. I just smiled a little.

Instead, silence settled again between us.

After a while, I shifted my weight slightly and exhaled.

There had been something sitting in the back of my mind since everything settled down.

Something I couldn’t ignore anymore.

So I cleared my throat.

“I should probably say something.”

Alexander glanced at me again.

I rubbed the back of my neck slowly, trying to find the right way to put it without making it worse than it

already was.

“I may have given the impression at some point that I had feelings for the Luna.”

His expression didn’t change, so I continued.

“Or said something that could’ve been wrong.”

I paused briefly.

He meant it.

He leaned back against the railing.

“You don’t choose what crosses your mind.”

A faint pause.

“But you do choose what you do with it.”

That settled more comfortably than I expected.

I let out a slow breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.

“As long as nothing crosses that line, there’s no issue.”

I nodded once.

That was enough.

No tension, no lingering weight between us.

He turned his gaze back toward the trees.

Then his expression shifted slightly… more serious now.

“The reason I came out here isn’t that.”

I already knew that part.

So I waited.

He folded his arms.

“What do you intend to do now?”

The question landed heavily.

Because I had been circling it all morning without ever truly touching it.

I looked away from him.

“I don’t know.”

The honesty came easily, even if it wasn’t satisfying.

Alexander didn’t interrupt.

So I continued.

“I thought about going back.”

My jaw tightened slightly at the thought.

Because wanting something and being ready for it were two very different things.

“I’ve got my memories now.”

A pause.

“I know what happened. I know who I am.”

My grip tightened slightly on the railing.
