Chapter 496

FAYE

I stepped outside without really planning to.

One moment, I was inside, trying to make sense of my own thoughts, and the next, I found myself standing at the edge of the doorway, blinking against the morning light.

The air felt different out here.

Softer somehow.

Or maybe it was just me.

For a second, nobody spoke.

They had already been talking before I arrived. I caught some of the conversation.

They were so into the topic that they must have forgotten Helen and I were aroundI could tell

that much from the way their attention shifted the moment I appeared.

Both of them turned toward me at the same time.

Their gazes were heavy in a way I couldn’t immediately explain.

And suddenly, I became very aware of myself standing there in the open.

My fingers tightened slightly against the fabric of my clothes.

I could feel it immediately.

That look.

The one people give you when they aren’t sure you should still be standing.

When they are trying to adjust to the fact that you are.

It wasn’t terrible. Not at all.

But it still made something inside me twist uncomfortably.

Everyone was still trying to catch up with the fact that I was alive at all.

I shifted my weight slightly, suddenly unsure of what to do with my hands.

Roman spoke first.

His voice was calm.

But softer than I expected.

Luna, it’s good to see you like this,he said.

He paused briefly.

Back to yourself.”

Something in his tone made me feel warm in a strange way.

Like I hadn’t fully realized how many people had been holding their breath until that moment.

I swallowed and nodded faintly, not trusting my voice immediately.

Alexander didn’t say anything yet.

He just looked at me.

Like he was making sure I was actually real.

Then I took a step forward.

The moment I moved, Alexander did too.

He extended his hand without hesitation.

A simple gesture.

But it went a long way for me.

I hesitated for half a second before placing my hand in his.

His grip was steady. Warm.

Familiar in a way that made all the tension disappear.

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding.

Then I noticed Roman shifting.

Subtle.

Almost like he was preparing to step away.

To give space.

To leave us to whatever conversation he thought he was interrupting.

Roman,” I said before I could think too much about it.

He stopped.

Not fully turned yet.

But he paused.

I took a small breath, trying to steady myself.

I heard part of what you were saying.

That made both of them look at me seriously now.

I tightened my grip slightly on Alexander’s hand, then gently let go so I could step forward a bit

more.

My voice came out clearer this time.

You can’t justwander without direction.

Roman frowned slightly.

I continued anyway.

It’s not safe for someone like you to move around like that right now.

I didn’t mean it harshly.

It was just the truth as I understood it.

The world outside didn’t feel stable enough for anyone unsure of where they were going. A lone wolf is always an easy targetespecially one who has no direction.

Roman exhaled slowly.

Then nodded once.

I know.

There was a pause.

Then he added, more carefully,

I wasn’t planning to just drift. I just need to make up my mind.

I studied him for a moment.

He looked like he had already been having the same conversation in his head long before I arrived.

I have someone I want to find,” he said finally.

That caught my attention.

Alexander shifted slightly beside me, but didn’t interrupt.

Roman continued.

A relative.

His gaze

drifted briefly toward the trees.

I don’t know exactly where she is, but I know enough to be able to look.

I studied Roman carefully after he spoke.

A relativesomeone he wanted to find.

The answer sounded reasonable enough.

Maybe even sensible.

But something about it felt incomplete.

Not necessarily dishonest.

But it sounded unfinished.

Like it was a thought he had grabbed onto because he needed an answer and happened to have

one available.

I wasn’t sure.

And judging by the look that briefly crossed Alexander’s face, I wasn’t the only one thinking it.

I glanced sideways at him.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

There was a certain look in his eyes.

One I had learned to recognize.

The look he got when he was analyzing something and choosing not to challenge it.

He wasn’t convinced.

At least not completely.

Neither was I.

Roman was standing there talking about a relative he wanted to find, but there was still uncertainty

all over him.

The kind that didn’t disappear simply because someone had named a destination.

For a moment, I considered asking more questions.

Which relative?

Where?

Why now?

But I stopped myself.

Because what would be the point?

If Roman genuinely wanted to talk about it, he would.

And if he wasn’t ready, pushing him wouldn’t help.

Besides, he had already made one thing clear.

He wasn’t staying because he needed something for himself.

I could understand that.

Even if I didn’t entirely like it.

So instead of questioning him, I stayed quiet.

Alexander did the same.

The silence lingered briefly between the three of us.

Then Alexander straightened slightly.

His expression softened.

And whatever doubts he might have had remained exactly where they belongedunspoken.

If that’s what you’ve decided,” he said calmly, then I wish you the best.

Roman looked at him.

Alexander’s voice remained steady.

There aren’t many people who choose the harder road when they have easier options available.

A faint smile appeared on Roman’s face.

Small.

But genuine.

Alexander continued.

I hope you find whatever it is you’re looking for.

Roman lowered his head slightly.

Thank you, Alpha Alexander.

Then Alexander stepped forward and placed a hand on his shoulder.

The gesture was brief.

And Roman.

Roman looked up.

Alexander’s expression turned serious.

If you ever need anything

He paused.

anything at all.

The emphasis wasn’t accidental.

It carried weight.

The kind that left no room for misunderstanding.

You reach out. Don’t hesitate.

Something shifted in Roman’s expression.

Something that looked suspiciously like emotion.

Not enough for him to show it openly.

But enough that I noticed.

Enough that Alexander probably noticed too.

Roman swallowed once before nodding.

I will.
