I remained in the office for what must have been close to two hours.
By then, several files lay open across the coffee table in front of me.
The tablet Alexander had given me rested on my lap.
The more I read, the less this situation made sense.
The numbers matched, the dates matched, and the approvals were there.
Even the supporting documents appeared complete.
I was so absorbed in comparing one document with another that I barely noticed the office door opening.
Only when I heard footsteps did I finally look up.
It was Cole.
He stopped the moment he saw me.
“Oh,” he said with a friendly smile. “Luna.”
“Hello, Cole,” I replied.
“I thought the Alpha was still here,” he admitted, glancing around the office. “I saw the lights on.”
“He went back to our chambers,” I explained. “He said he was tired and needed to rest.”
A small smirk tugged at the corner of Cole’s mouth.
It was brief.
So brief that I doubted he intended for me to notice it.
But I did.
And I knew exactly what it meant.

Alexander would rather sit through three more meetings than openly admit he was tired.
If he had actually said those words, there was a very good chance he had simply been looking for a polite way to excuse himself from the conversation.
Cole had obviously reached the same conclusion.
He probably suspected Alexander and I had disagreed about something.
Being the person Cole was, though, he had far too much respect for both of us to ask.
Instead, he simply walked farther into the office.

His eyes drifted toward the growing pile of documents scattered across the table.
“What are you working on?” he asked.
I gestured toward the files.
“I’m trying to make sense of all this.”
Cole glanced over them before looking back at me.
“Do you need any help?”
“Actually,” I replied almost immediately, “yes.”
He looked mildly surprised by that.
“I do need your help,” I added.
“What do you need?” Cole asked.

“Alexander mentioned that you keep soft copies of every petition and report submitted to the Alpha’s
office.”
“I do,” Cole replied.
“I’d like to see them,” I said.
He didn’t ask why. He simply nodded.
“Give me a moment,” he said.
Walking over to Alexander’s desk, he picked up the laptop resting there before bringing it back to the
lounge area.
He sat down across from me, opened it, and powered it on.
After entering a few passwords, he began navigating through several folders.
It took him a few minutes.
“There,” he said.
He turned the screen slightly toward me.
I scooted closer until I could comfortably see everything.
Cole patiently opened one record after another.
Whenever I struggled to understand a section, he explained it without making me feel as though I should already know.
For nearly another half hour, we compared the digital records with the hard copies lying open across the
table.
One after another… page after page.

Nothing differed. Everything matched the dates, the signatures, the reference numbers.

Even the receipts on Alexander’s tablet corresponded perfectly with both the archived letters and the digital files.
I leaned back slowly.
“This all matches,” I murmured.
“It should,” Cole replied.
I remained quiet for a few moments.
Then Cole looked at me curiously.
“Luna…”
“Yes?”
“Why are you worrying yourself this much over this case?” he asked.
I looked down at the papers.
“Because I have reason to believe those people weren’t wrong to feel angry.”
