Chapter 554-2
The thought had only just fully formed in my own mind.
Everything suddenly seemed different.
Alexander was one man.
An exceptionally dedicated man.
But still…
Only one man.
He governed a territory as large as Blood Crescent… oversaw businesses, council meetings, training, border security, finance, disputes, and construction.
There was no realistic way he could personally travel to every settlement to verify every single project that had been approved under his authority.
Of course he visited when he could.
Of course he inspected major projects himself whenever time allowed.
But the eastern border wasn’t the only place under his responsibility.
Nor was it the only region submitting reports.
Even Cole helped shoulder a great deal of that responsibility.
But Cole was the Beta.
He had his own duties, his own workload, and his own limitations.
Which meant there were so many cases of third–party involvement.
I slowly turned toward him.
“Cole…”
He looked at me.
r
“Can you honestly tell me that every single project approved by this office reached every single border exactly the way it was supposed to?”
Cole became very still.
He didn’t answer.
He simply sat there, looking thoughtful.
By the time I returned to our chambers, the pack house had grown noticeably quieter.

The day had finally begun to settle.
closed the door softly behind me and walked into the bedroom.
Surprisingly, Alexander was actually in bed.

The blankets were pulled up to his waist, one arm resting loosely across his stomach while the other lay beside him.
His eyes were closed.
For a moment, I simply stood there watching him.
I wasn’t entirely sure whether he was really asleep or merely resting with his eyes closed
Knowing Alexander, either was possible.
He had perfected the art of looking asleep while still hearing every little thing happening around him.
I considered speaking to him.
Instead, I decided against it.
If he really was as exhausted as he had claimed earlier, then the last thing he needed was another
conversation.
He deserved the rest.
Quietly, I picked up my nightclothes and headed into the bathroom.
The warm shower helped wash away some of the heaviness that had settled over me throughout the day.
Unfortunately, it didn’t wash away my thoughts.
They remained exactly where they had been.
When I finally stepped back into the bedroom dressed in my nightwear, Alexander hadn’t moved.
The room remained peaceful.
I carefully lifted the blanket and climbed into bed.
Every movement was slow.
I didn’t want to wake him if he was genuinely sleeping.
Once I had settled beneath the covers, I turned my head slightly to look at him.
The steady rise and fall of his chest answered the question I had been asking myself ever since I walked
into the room.
He really was asleep.
A small sigh escaped me.

Hfelt unexpectedly quilty.
The last conversation we’d had before he came to the room replayed itself in my mind.
I wondered whether he had gone to sleep still thinking about it.
Whether he believed I had doubted him.
Whether he thought I had trusted a stranger’s words over his.-
That hadn’t been what I meant at all.
I had never questioned the kind of Alpha Alexander was.
But intentions didn’t always erase hurt.
