The council chamber had never felt as heavy as it did that evening.

The weight of everything happening in Silver Hollow seemed to sit on every person present.

Jason stood at the head of the table, his expression already tense before the discussion had properly begun.

He had spent days trying to hold everything together.

At least, that was what he kept telling himself.

He had ordered investigations, increased patrols, held meetings, and demanded answers.

Yet every time he looked around the room, he felt like the people sitting before him were waiting for him to

fail.

That was the part that angered him the most right now.

It was the way some members of the council looked at him.

Elder Vincent, sitting across from him, seemed to notice his frustration.

“You speak as if nothing has been done,” Jason replied.

His voice was controlled, but the irritation underneath it was obvious.

Vincent looked at him.

“I speak about results.”

That single sentence struck harder than Jason expected.

Because that was exactly what he feared.

“You think I have been sitting here doing nothing?” Jason asked.

Vincent did not answer immediately.

I have reviewed reports personally. I have met with members of this council repeatedly, trying to find a

solution.”

His voice became sharper with every sentence.

“I have spent every day dealing with this situation while people continue to act as if I have ignored it.”

Jason noticed it.

And instead of calming him, it pushed him further.

“I have taken action,” he continued. “I have not allowed this matter to remain unanswered.”
