I watched the road ahead for a while, but the thought that had been bothering me since we left home refused to go away.
The farther we traveled from the pack house, the more I thought about what we were actually heading into. This was not a simple visit where Alexander would arrive, speak with a few people, and leave. We were going into a region where people had already been angry enough to organize an attack against me, and now we were driving straight toward them.
Whoever was organizing those people knew what they were doing. They would definitely be using the common wolves, not even actual warriors.
Those were the hardest to fight. One wrong move and Alexander would be accused of abusing his strength… killing harmless members of his own pack. No one would ask to know if those harmless wolves had silver weapons or not.
I looked over at Alexander.
He looked completely calm behind the wheel, his attention focused on the road ahead. One hand rested on the steering wheel while the other rested on my knee. There was something almost frustrating about how relaxed he always seemed, even when the situation around him was anything but all right.
“Alexander,” I called.
He glanced briefly in my direction. “Yes?”
I hesitated for a moment, trying to decide how to phrase my concern.
“Did you consider the possibility that these people might try something again?”
His expression changed slightly as he looked ahead.
“What do you mean?”
I looked back at the road.
“I mean, they already attacked once. They were angry enough to plan an ambush because they wanted to make their point. What if they try something again? What if they decide to attack us on the way there or even when we arrive?”
For a moment, Alexander didn’t answer.

His face became serious, and he went quiet.
I watched him. The way he stared ahead.
The slight tension in his expression. The silence before he responded.
For a second, I actually thought he was deeply considering the possibility.
“I thought about it,” he finally said.
I waited for him to continue.
“Of course they might want to try something like that.”
I nodded slowly because that was exactly what I was talking about.
Then he added, “Which is why I am going with my personal warrior to protect me.”
I stared at him.
For a moment, I said nothing.
Then I realized he was not being serious in the way I had expected.
I reached over and lightly punched his arm.
“Seriously?”
A small smirk formed on his face as he continued driving, completely unfazed.
I honestly wondered what I was even thinking, asking him such a question.
Of course Alexander would turn it into a joke.
“Actually, now that I think about it,” he said, sounding thoughtful, “I am a little concerned.”
I looked at him.
“Concerned?”
He nodded slightly while keeping his eyes on the road.
“Yes. Because if my backup is already thinking this way, then what chance do I have?”
I rolled my eyes immediately, trying and failing to hold back a laugh.
He was impossible.
I folded my arms across my chest and leaned back in my seat.

“Just drive.”
A quiet laugh escaped him.
“Yes, Luna.”

ALEXANDER
The guards at the entrance recognized my vehicle immediately.
By the time I got close, the gates were already opening.
As expected.
Jacob and the others had arrived well ahead of us. There was no way news of my arrival
hadn’t reached the settlement before I did.
The guards greeted me as I drove past.
I returned the greetings with a nod and continued toward the administrative block.
Several elders were already waiting outside.
The moment I parked and stepped out, they approached us.
“Alpha Alexander, Luna.”
“Elders.”
One by one, we exchanged greetings. Even the men who had obviously prepared themselves for confrontation remained respectful. Whatever grievances they had, they still kept it together.
Elder Rufus stepped forward.
“We were pleased to hear you were coming yourself. It has been several months since your last visit to the eastern border.”
“I know,” I replied simply.
Rufus gestured toward the administrative building.
“Please, Alpha. The meeting room has already been prepared…”
I raised a hand, stopping him before he could continue.

“I’m under a bit of a time constraint today.”
They fell silent.
“I’ll have to return to the capital before the day is over.”
The elders nodded in understanding, and Rufus spoke again.
