He remained quiet.

His voice remained calm.

“…you’ve just promised something that’s almost impossible,” he said.

“I don’t even know what my schedule looks like tomorrow,” he continued.

“I haven’t gone through tomorrow’s appointments yet.”

His gaze settled back on me.

“So tell me…”

A faint hint of amusement appeared despite the seriousness of his words.

“When tomorrow comes, and I can’t make it…”

He folded his arms.

“If you were coming in anyway,” he asked dryly, “what was the point of asking?”

“To give you two a chance to wrap up,” Irene said.

Without another word, he walked past Irene and left the room.

I looked at her gratefully.

She waved it off like it was nothing before throwing herself dramatically onto the bed.

“How exactly do you plan on getting him there tomorrow?”

I leaned against the dresser and crossed my arms.

“I honestly don’t know.”

“I just want Helen to be happy.”

She tilted her head. “The way you’re supporting Mom on this.”
