Chapter 567
FAYE
The drive to the city was surprisingly peaceful.

For some reason, I found myself appreciating the simplicity of it. There was no urgent matter waiting for me to solve, no difficult conversation that needed to be handled carefully, and no reason for me to constantly think three steps ahead.
It was just Irene and me, driving to get a birthday gift for Helen. I was going shopping for the first time in a long time.
Irene had always been easy to talk to. She had a way of making conversations feel natural, even when the topic changed every few minutes.
The thing is… you never actually realize how much you miss Irene until she comes around.
For a while, we talked about different gift ideas for Helen, although most of Irene’s suggestions ended with her immediately rejecting them herself.
“She already has everything,” Irene complained.
I smiled as I kept my attention on the road.
“So you have no idea what to get her,” I said.
Irene looked at me.
“That’s right. Which is why it’s good you’re coming with me.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“What makes you think I can help? I don’t even know her like you do.”
“Because you somehow managed to get my brother to paint you… You can literally do anything,” Irene said.
I laughed.
“Come on… I already explained that.”
“Yes, and I still don’t believe it was just because of a bet.”
I shook my head, smiling.
Irene would not let me hear the last of it. That much was obvious.

The conversation eventually shifted, and after a comfortable silence, I thought about something.
“What about Jeff?” I asked.
Irene looked away from the window and turned toward me.
“Oh, he’s fine.”
“I thought he would be coming back with you for the gathering.”
It made sense that he should be around too. He was basically family now.
A smile immediately appeared on Irene’s face.
“He wanted to come with me,” Irene explained.
There was a warmth in her voice whenever she spoke about him.
“But he couldn’t make it,” she added.
“Why?” I asked.
“He had to travel to see his parents.”
I nodded.
It was a simple answer.
A normal answer.
But for a brief moment, my mind caught on to something else.
Jeff is from Stonevale… His parents were in Stonevale.
I didn’t say anything, but Irene noticed the slight change in my expression.
“Faye?”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She studied me carefully, the smile fading from her lips slowly.
“Are you okay?” Irene asked.
I immediately softened my expression.

“I’m fine.”
I didn’t know if she was completely convinced, but she didn’t question me further.
Thankfully.
I didn’t want to turn a simple conversation into something heavier than it needed to be.
My thoughts were not about Jeff anyway… Not directly.

From everything I knew, he cared about Irene. He had always treated her well, and I had no reason to think otherwise.
I simply needed a moment to adjust.
Irene seemed to be satisfied with my answer because she quickly moved on.
“My mating ceremony is coming up soon,” she said.
The excitement in her voice made me smile.
“Really?”
She nodded happily.
“Yes.”
She looked down at her hands for a moment, almost shy despite the confidence she usually
carried.
“And Jeff said we should have the wedding immediately after.”
“That’s wonderful,” I said.
“I know.”
She smiled.
“We’re just trying to figure out where to hold it,” she said.
“Do you have any ideas?” I asked.
“We have a few,” Irene replied.
She began explaining the different options they had discussed.
The ceremony.
The guests.

The location.
The kind of atmosphere they wanted.
I listened as she spoke, occasionally giving my opinion when she asked.
There was something genuinely beautiful about the way she talked about her future with Jeffrey.
She wasn’t just excited about the ceremony itself.
She was excited about building a life with someone she loved.
And I understood that feeling.
A part of me wondered what it would have been like to have something so simple to look forward to before everything became complicated.

Now, there was something unsettling about knowing Jeffery was from Stonevale and Irene wasn’t just from Blood Crescent, but was also Alpha Alexander’s sister.
Alexander might be a lot, but he was not petty. Darren, on the other hand…
From where I stood, it was hard not to have negative feelings about the whole thing.
But I quickly pushed the thought away.
This was Irene’s happiness.
I didn’t want my worries to take any part of that from her.
“So what do you think?” she asked suddenly.
I blinked.
“About what?”
She narrowed her eyes..
“You weren’t listening.”
I laughed softly.
“I was.”
“You were thinking about something else, weren’t you?” Irene asked.
“Maybe a little.”
