Chapter 574

ALEXANDER

The morning had started normally enough. I had gotten dressed, checked that everything was in

order, and prepared myself for a day that was supposed to be different from my usual routine.

There would be no meetings. I hoped there would be no responsibilities demanding my immediate

attention and no reason for me to spend the entire day focused on anything other than my family.

That was what Helen had asked for. And for some reason, Faye was beginning to enjoy the idea

more than Helen herself.

She believed I needed it more than anyone.

I hadn’t completely disagreed with her, even if I hadn’t admitted it at the time.

As I adjusted my watchI suddenly felt it.

My wolf, Aiden, stirred.

I stopped.

The reaction was immediate, but it wasn’t the kind of response I was used to.

It wasn’t the kind of reaction I got when there was danger nearby. It did not feel like an

approaching threat or the presence of an enemy. There was no aggression, no instinct telling me to prepare for a fightThe feeling was completely different.

It was something else.

Something unfamiliar.

I stood still for a moment, trying to understand what had caused it.

Nothing around me had changed.

There was no strange scent.

No unusual sound.

No obvious reason for the sudden uneasiness that moved through me.

Yet my wolf remained restless.

That alone bothered me.

I had spent my entire life learning to trust my instincts. They had guided me through situations

when it was simply reacting to something unusual.

But this feeling was unfamiliar.

A cold heaviness settled in my chest. It wasn’t painfulNot exactly.

It was more like a strange emptiness, a feeling that something was wrong even though couldn’t

explain what.

I placed a hand over my chest.

The sensation remained for a few seconds before slowly fading. I frowned, then swallowed.

What is this?

The question was directed more toward myself than anyone else.

I expected Aiden to say something, but he was silent.

I shook my head and forced myself to move. It was probably nothing.

There were plenty of reasons for my body to react strangely. Lack of rest, exhaustion, and stress could affect even the strongest person. I had spent enough time pushing myself to know that

eventually, it caught up with me.

That had to be all it was.

When I walked downstairs, Faye was already waiting.

The moment she looked at me, I knew she noticed somethingShe always did.

Alexander?

I looked at her.

She studied my expression carefully. Are you alright?

I smiled.

There were very few people who could look at me and immediately know something was wrong. Faye had become one of them. If I said it was nothingshe wouldn’t believe it.

I’m not sure,I said.

She didn’t waste time. What happened?

I didn’t know how to explain what I was feeling. I myself didn’t even understand it; how could I make someone else understand?

I didn’t say anything

Faye watched me quietly. Then she gave me a small smile. Maybe you’re tired.

I looked at her.

Before I could respond, it hit me again. The coldness spread across my chest as Aiden reactedAgain.

My heartbeat rang in my ears. I shut my eyes for a minute and took a deep breath.

Probably,I replied.

This time around, I was sure it wasn’t about stress. But I didn’t want her to worry, so I decided to go

along with her theory. It was the simplest explanation anyway.

The easiest one to accept.

This is exactly why today is a good idea, she said. You get the off day you deserve. She smiled.

I raised an eyebrow, smirking. Is that what you think?

Yes.She crossed her arms. You need time away from everything. You need to spend a few hours doing something that doesn’t involve solving problems.

I looked at her. You make it sound like I’m incapable of relaxing.”

You are.The answer came too quickly.

I stared at her.

She tried not to smile.

I shook my head, but I couldn’t stop the small smile that appeared. She was right. And we both knew this idea of taking the day off was not going to worknot when I still had my phone with me. If anything came calling, I would drive right back immediately.

I took a deep breath and relaxed.

Whatever was happening to me, I would figure it out if there was something to figure out. I wasn’t about to give it unnecessary attention.

When we got to the cars, Faye and I rode together while Irene and Cole took Irene’s car.

Faye sat beside me with a relaxed expression, leaning back comfortably in her seat as she looked out the window.

Normally, I would have tried to start a conversation.

I would have asked what she was thinking or made some comment just to hear her response.

But today, I didn’t.

I glanced at her briefly. She seemed completely at ease. There was no tension in her expression, no worry in her eyes.

She simply enjoyed the quiet.

And perhaps she understood that I needed it too.

FAYE

I sat quietly beside Alexander, watching the scenery pass by through the window, but my mind was

nowhere near the road.

It kept returning to one thing.

What Alexander had told me yesterday about VinceAndrea’s father.

The name alone was enough to bring back the confusion I had felt when Alexander first said it.

Could he really be right?

Was it possible that Andrea didn’t know her own father well enough to realize what he was capable

of?

Was Andrea trying to manipulate me?

Or was Alexander wrong?

Was he simply trying to make me doubt someone because he already believed the worst about

Vince?

I wanted to believe that was the case.

I wanted to believe there was another explanation.

But deep down, I knew exactly what Alexander believed.

And the frustrating part was that I couldn’t completely dismiss it.
