Lunch felt exactly like the kind of moment Helen had wanted.

Simple and warm.

Everyone was relaxed, and for the first time in what felt like a long time, there were no serious conversations hanging over the table.

I laughed quietly.

But after the teasing faded, Helen’s expression became more serious.

“I know I can be difficult sometimes

Helen looked offended, but she wasn’t. “I don’t understand why everyone acts like I have unreasonable expectations.”

The table filled with laughter.

I found myself smiling as I watched them. It was strange how natural everything felt.

After some time, Helen slowly placed her utensils down.

“Excuse me… I’ll be right back.”

“Where are you going?” Alexander asked.

“I just need to get something.” She smiled. “I’ll be back soon.”

She stood and left the table.

My eyes followed her as she walked away.

I watched until she disappeared upstairs

The rest of lunch continued peacefully.

Helen eventually returned downstairs, but not until after we had finished eating.

By then, Irene and I had already cleared the table and taken everything back into the kitchen.

I was already considering checking on Helen when she finally appeared again.

She had changed her outfit.

It was still elegant because everything Helen wore somehow managed to look that way, but this one was clearly simple.

“I had to change into something a little more comfortable,” she explained as she walked toward us in the living room.

Alexander had already taken at least three calls since we left the dining room.

But even when he was sitting with us, part of him seemed somewhere else.

She smiled before heading upstairs.

Cole stood shortly after.

“I think I’ll take advantage of that nap.”

He stretched slightly before following behind.

I looked toward Helen, who was waiting for us.

Then I followed as well.

Together, we started walking upstairs.

Except Alexander remained where he was.

I glanced back.

He was still seated, his attention briefly on his phone.

“I’ll catch up,” he said.

I knew exactly what that meant.

There was probably something work–related he needed to handle first.
