Chapter 581

FAYE

I followed them toward the mansion, but after a few steps, I slowed down.

Something stopped me.

I couldn’t explain what it was. There was simply a strange feeling sitting heavily in my chest, a quiet warning that made it difficult to keep walking.

I looked back.

Helen was still sitting alone near the pool.

Everyone else had already moved ahead, but my feet refused to continue. I stood there for a

moment, debating whether I was being unreasonable. Maybe I was overthinking things.

Maybe I was allowing my mind to create problems where there were none.

But then I saw Helen move.

She reached into the small purse beside her and pulled something out.

A handkerchief.

At first, I assumed she was simply going to wipe her face or clean her hands.

Instead, she lifted it to her mouth.

My eyebrows pulled together as I watched her.

She wasn’t coughing the way I expected. It was a small, controlled movement, almost like she was clearing her throat.

Then she lowered the handkerchief.

And I froze.

There was blood on it.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move. My mind struggled to understand what I was seeing

Helen looked down at the stained fabric, but she didn’t panic. She didn’t look frightened. She didn’t even seem surprised.

She simply folded the handkerchief carefully and placed it back inside her purse

Chapter 581

The casual way she did it made my stomach tighten. She had done this before. That was the only explanation.

This wasn’t something that had caught her off guard. This wasn’t something she was discovering for the first time.

This was something she had learned to hide. I immediately wondered how many times she had done that tonight without any of us noticing.

My heart started beating faster.

“Helen.

My voice came out before I even realised I had spoken.

She looked up immediately. The moment she saw me walking toward her, her expression changed slightly.

It was subtle, but I noticed.

“Faye,” she said with a small smile. “Did you forget something?”

I stopped in front of her and stared.

She was pretending nothing had happened. She was actually trying to pretend that everything was normal.

“How long?”

The smile on her face slowly faded.

“What do you mean?”

I shook my head.

“How long has this been happening?”

Helen looked away briefly.

“Faye…”

“Don’t lie to me, Helen. I saw it.” My voice cracked slightly.

Silence settled between us.

“I saw the handkerchief.”

Her expression softened, but she still avoided answering.

“It isn’t serious.”

I stared at her.

“You’re coughing out blood… a lot of blood.”

“I am receiving treatment,” Helen said. She reached for my hand, trying to reassure me. “The healers are already helping me. I will be fine,” she added.

I couldn’t believe how calmly she said it.

“Helen…”

I didn’t even know what to say.

How could she stand there and tell me she was fine when I had just watched her wipe such a large amount of blood from her mouth?

This must have been the same thing that happened to her in my room earlier. It wasn’t a regular cough.

I remembered how panicked she had looked then. She didn’t want me to know. No wonder the bathroom had smelled like there was blood everywhere.

Before she could continue, her expression suddenly changed.

Her hand moved quickly toward her face. But I had already seen it. A thin line of blood slowly moved beneath her nose.

My breath caught.

“Helen.”

She immediately turned away and reached for her purse, searching for another handkerchief.

I grabbed her arm gently and turned her back toward me as she wiped it off quickly.

My voice was shaking now.

“Don’t hide it.”

For the first time, Helen looked like she didn’t know what to say. The calm expression she had been holding started to break.

Tears were already forming in my eyes.

“What is happening to you?”

She remained silent. Then she took a slow breath.

“Faye…”

Her voice was quiet.

“I need you to promise me something.”

My chest tined.

Why?”

Helen looked away. Then she finally said the words I never expected to hear from her.

“I’m dying.”

Everything inside me stopped. It felt like an entire bucket of ice water had been poured over my head and had run all the way to my feet.

I couldn’t process it. I couldn’t even speak.
