Chapter 611
ALEXANDER
I had to lean against the edge of my desk to keep me steady. I wanted to get angry at her for keeping it away from me. I wanted to express my disappointment.
But nothing came out.
I couldn’t bring myself to speak. My mind was moving too quickly, going through every possibility and rejecting each one almost as quickly as it appeared.
There was only one explanation that made sense. I already knew the answer… I just needed
to hear it from her.
“Mom…” I paused, tightening my grip around the phone. “It’s the dark magic, isn’t it?”
Helen didn’t answer directly. She didn’t say yes, and she didn’t deny it either. She took a slow breath.
“I knew what I was getting into before I did it, Alexander.”
That was enough. I had my answer. I leaned more heavily against the desk, staring down at
the floor.
“You said it’ll only affect you if it didn’t work. You said if it failed, I could lose you and Faye,” I said. “It worked, Mom. Why are you dying? I don’t understand.”
Helen sighed. “Alexander, some things are not that simple. Sometimes, it’s not just black or white… There’s that gray line in between too,” she said.
I ran my palm down my face as I realised what she meant by that.
“I knew the risks, Alexander,” Helen said.
I pushed myself upright, even though my legs felt weaker than they had a moment earlier.
I shook my head. “You are not going to die.”
“Alexander-”
“No, Mom,” I cut her off. “There has to be something. There is always a way out… You taught me that.”
There was silence on the other end. I could hear her breathing.

“Nothing can be done for me, my boy. I have accep
should too,” Helen said.
A short, disbelieving laugh escaped me.
“Why would you say that?”
I shook my head again.
“Of all people, you should know better,” I added.

that… And now that you know, you
She remained quiet. I walked slowly around my desk, trying to convince myself of the words
as I said them.
“Faye brought me back to life. You know she did,” I said. “And you brought Faye back to life yourself.”
My voice grew steadier as I continued.
“So don’t sit there and tell me that nothing can be done for you.”
I didn’t know whether I was trying to convince her or myself anymore.
“We’ll find a way out of this, I promise.”
She remained silent. It was obvious that she didn’t want to argue with me. Somehow, that was worse than if she had.
I waited for her to tell me I was being unreasonable. I wanted her to challenge me, to remind me of everything I was forgetting. That was the Helen I knew.
“I’ll send the driver for you tomorrow. You’ll come to the pack house, and we’ll figure this out,”
I said.
She was silent for a minute, then she sighed softly.
“I’ll come to the house, but not tomorrow. I’ll be busy.”
I laughed before I realised it.
Of course. Helen never missed her routine.
She could be dying tomorrow morning and would still remember to water her plants as long as she was breathing.
“Fine,” I said.
I heard her chuckle softly.

FAYE
I finished taking my bath for the night and stood in front of the mirror for a moment, drying my hair with the towel.
Alexander still wasn’t back in the room. It had been about two hours or more since he stormed out of the room.
I glanced toward the door.
I wasn’t particularly worried. I had a pretty good idea where he was… His office.
He had probably gone back there to cool off away from me. I was certain he hadn’t left the pack house because his car keys were still in the bedroom.
I dropped the towel onto the chair and changed into my nightwear before stepping out of the bedroom.
I walked into the sitting room and toward the couch. Something caught my attention before I could sit down.
The medicine. My eyes settled on the small bottle Dr. Adams had sent for Alexander. It was still exactly where Alexander had left it.
I stopped. For some reason, I found myself staring at it. I had almost forgotten about it after everything that had happened earlier.
Slowly, I walked over and picked it up. I turned it around in my hand, looking at the bottle
again.
If Alexander hadn’t known that Helen was sick when Dr. Adams brought the medicine, then it couldn’t have been for Helen.
That thought immediately brought another one. Was Alexander sick?
I frowned. Had he been hiding something from me? I sat down on the couch, still holding the
bottle.
I remembered the conversation we’d had this evening. The way he had asked whether Martha had told me anything about the dosage.
