I woke up earlier than usual. For a few seconds, I simply lay there staring at the ceiling, listening to the quiet of the chambers. The house was still, and judging by the silence outside, most of the pack hadn’t started their day yet.

I didn’t feel like going back to sleep. There was too much restless energy in me, and I needed to get out. I needed to run.

I turned towards the other side of the bed and saw Alexander still sleeping. He had joined me in bed about an hour after I came in last night.

I tried not to wake him. I just slipped out of bed and got dressed quickly, choosing something comfortable enough for a long run. I tied my shoes, grabbed my headphones, and left the chambers without making much noise.

By the time I reached the main entrance, the house was beginning to wake up. A few servants were already moving around, and two guards stood at the gate. They straightened when they noticed me approaching.

“Good morning, Luna.”

“Good morning.”

I stopped in front of the gate. “Open it for me, please.”

One of the guards exchanged a brief look with the other. I noticed the hesitation immediately.

“What is it?” I asked.

The older of the two cleared his throat. “You’re going outside alone at this hour, Luna?”

I looked at him. “I’m just going for a run. I’ll be fine.” I understood their concern. The territory was actually safe to an extent, so that wasn’t the real problem. The problem was Alexander’s reaction in case something went wrong.

He hesitated again, and I smiled. “I won’t be long.”

He still looked uncertain, but after a moment, he nodded. “Yes, Luna.”

He motioned for the gate to be opened. The heavy gates moved apart, and I stepped through.

The moment I was outside, I put my headphones on and started running. I didn’t have a particular route in mind. I simply ran. The music filled my ears, drowning out everything else around me. I didn’t have to listen to the sounds of the pack house or the voices of the servants. I didn’t have to think. For once, I could simply move.

My pace gradually increased as I went farther from the house. The familiar paths around the territory eventually gave way to quieter trails surrounded by trees and thick vegetation.

I kept running, following the path without paying much attention to how far I had gone. The farther I went,

the easier it became to breathe, and felt the tension in my shoulders slowly loosen.

By the time I finally stopped, my breathing was heavy. I bent forward slightly, resting my hands on my knees as I caught my breath, then pulled one side of my headphones away from my ear.

The forest was quiet. I straightened slowly and looked around.

That was when I smelled it.

Blood.

My entire body went still. I took a deeper breath, trying to locate where the scent was coming from. It was close.

I removed my headphones completely and let them hang around my neck. I turned slowly, scanning the area, but there was nothing immediately obvious. Then I heard it a faint sound, almost like a whimper.

My attention shifted towards the trees. I followed the sound carefully, pushing past a few low branches until I saw movement farther ahead.

An animal was lying on the ground.

I stopped when I saw that it was wounded. It was a deer. There was blood on its fur, and from the way it was breathing, I could tell it was in pain. My heart tightened.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

The deer immediately lifted its head, and fear flashed through its eyes. I stopped moving.

“It’s alright,” I said softly.

It tried to pull itself farther away from me, but the movement seemed to cause it more pain.

“Easy. I’m not going to hurt you.”

I lowered myself slowly, keeping my movements deliberate. The deer watched me carefully.

“I just want to see where you’re hurt,” I said gently.

It remained tense, so I stayed where I was.

“You’re okay. I’m not going to do anything to you.”

-stroked its fur again, this time more gently. The deer remained still. It was still frightened, but it wasn’t trying to move away anymore.

I continued petting it, speaking softly whenever it tensed. “You’re safe.”

I looked around to see if there was someone or another animal close by. Maybe it had gotten into a fight with another animal… I didn’t see or hear anything.

My fingers moved carefully over its body until I reached the injured area. It whimpered.

“I know, I know it hurts.”

I pulled my hand back slightly.

“Let me help you.”
