I walked into our chambers with the tea and found Alexander in the sitting room.

He was sitting on the couch, looking far more relaxed than he had been when he walked past me earlier, although I knew better than to assume that meant his mood had improved

He had already taken his bath. His hair was still damp, with a few strands falling loosely over his forehead, and he was dressed simply in a plain tank top and pants. There was nothing particularly unusual about the way he looked, but something about his quietness made the room feel heavy.

I walked over to the table and placed the tray down. Alexander glanced briefly in my direction but said nothing.

I pulled the table a little closer to him before picking up the bottle of medicine.

I didn’t look at him while I measured out the medicine. There was still something unsettled between us after our earlier conversation, and I didn’t want to make things more uncomfortable by forcing him to talk when he clearly wasn’t interested in doing so.

I poured the medicine into the tea and stirred it carefully.

Alexander remained silent throughout. When I finished, I held the cup out to him. He took it without saying anything.

For a minute, I thought he might ask me something, but he didn’t. He simply lifted the cup to his lips and drank the warm tea in one go.

The way he did it almost made me smile because it was just ridiculous. It was as though he was angry at the tea itself and wanted nothing more than to finish it and be done with it.

He lowered the cup and placed it back on the table. Then, without another word, he picked up his phone and turned his attention to the screen.

From the way his eyes moved across it, he looked as though he was reading.

For a while, I left him alone. He remained on the couch with his attention fixed on his phone, his thumb occasionally moving across the screen as he read through whatever was in front

I sat quietly on the other side of the room, pretending to occupy myself with my own thoughts.

It didn’t take long for me to notice that his expression was changing. He blinked slowly, then rubbed a hand over his face.

His movements had become slower, and his eyes seemed heavier than they had been before. He stared at his phone for several seconds without scrolling, as though he had forgotten what he was reading.

I wondered if the medicine was already getting to him. He didn’t seem to notice it himself.

He rubbed his eyes with his fingers and looked back down at the phone again.

Then, after another moment, he placed a call.

“Ash.”

His voice sounded slightly different too. Now I was sure he was feeling sleepy already. I didn’t expect the effect of the medicine to kick in so fast.

He listened for a moment before continuing.

“I’ve forwarded the approved version to you. Proceed with it first thing tomorrow morning,” Alexander said to Ash.

He paused.

“Yes. Just make sure everything is ready before the meeting,” Alexander said.

Another pause, then…

“Good. That’s all.”

He ended the call and placed the phone beside him.

I looked at him.

His eyes were already beginning to close again.

“Are you feeling sleepy?” I asked.

“I’m fine,” he said.

I frowned.

He leaned back against the couch.

“You can go ahead.”

There it was again, that distance… That quiet dismissal. Something inside me finally snapped.

“Alexander, I can’t do this with you,” I said.

His eyes lifted to mine. For the first time since this evening, he actually looked at me properly.

I stood there, trying to keep my voice steady, but it was harder than I thought.

“I know you’re upset with me,” I said.

He said nothing.

“I know you’re angry because I didn’t tell you about Helen. But I’m not sorry for keeping that particular secret.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.
