The third day at the factory was the day the winter uniforms were being distributed. As an assistant, Lynn was responsible for taking inventory.
Since every department was busy at the time, she had to move several boxes of uniforms upstairs by herself. Hundreds of uniforms were quite heavy, so she planned to carry them into the elevator one box at a time.
Just as she hoisted up a box, the weight on her shoulder suddenly lifted.
She saw Jesse, the man who had come by yesterday, taking the box from her. He was still wearing that same friendly smile.
"A girl shouldn't be doing this kind of work. I'm not busy anyway, let me help you with these boxes." Lynn was more confused than anything.
By the tenth box, Jesse was sweating profusely. He flashed a set of pearly white teeth. "You look so slender, I didn't expect you to be so strong."
"I'm from the countryside. I've been doing manual labor since I was a kid," Lynn replied.
"I'm from the countryside too! What a coincidence!"
Lynn didn't answer.
After they moved the clothes into the office, Lynn saw the sweat on his face and handed him a bottle of water and some tissues. She thought for a moment, perhaps as thanks for helping her with the ten boxes of clothes, and offered him a piece of advice: "I'll give you a call when Mr. Wallace gets back."
Jesse paused, then gave a goofy smile, turned, and walked away with the corners of his mouth lifted.
Unexpectedly, after that, Jesse seemed to stick to her like glue, finding all sorts of excuses to see her every day. Lynn would always ask the same thing: "What are you here for?"
Lynn didn't understand what he meant. She assumed Jesse was trying to bribe her, since she held the pricing information for all the company's products.
From then on, Jesse came every day, though never for long. Finally, Carlisle returned to the company, and Jesse successfully secured an order from Prosperity Electronics. Lynn became the liaison between the company and Jesse. As a result, their contact became much more frequent due to work.
One day, there was an issue with a product Jesse had processed, and it needed to be reworked immediately. It was already seven in the evening, and his employees had all gone home. After several unsuccessful negotiations with Prosperity's Vendor Manager, Jesse had no choice but to accept the rework. He first bought some late-night snacks and drinks for the vendor manager and the ladies in the packaging department, asking them to find a few workers to help him with the rework.
As Lynn was leaving work, she passed by the packaging department and saw Jesse, dressed in a gray suit, working alongside the packaging staff. Something in her heart was touched. She found him to be quite… genuine, not slick. Jesse was a boss, after all, yet he was willing to do the most basic work with his employees.
Jesse pulled an all-nighter and finally finished reworking all the products. He came to the office to get a release form signed by Lynn. When Lynn saw the dark circles under his eyes, she was startled and asked instinctively, "Didn't you sleep last night?"
