Jesse scratched his head. "Pulled an all-nighter. I'll go home, do some laundry, and then catch up on sleep."
Lynn paused again, her fingers tapping on the keyboard. She said casually, "Just throw your clothes in the washing machine. Or at the very least, have your wife help out, or wash them after you wake up."
Jesse suddenly laughed. "I don't even have a girlfriend, let alone a wife." He pulled up a chair and sat across from Lynn. "The apartment I'm renting doesn't have a washing machine. Besides, I think washing by hand gets them cleaner than a machine."
Lynn fell silent. Honestly, Jesse looked like he was in his mid-thirties; she'd assumed he had kids old enough to run errands. She was surprised he wasn't even married. And a man who did his own laundry by hand? Definitely a plus.
That's when Lynn learned that Jesse was actually only 25; he just looked older than his age.
Seeing Lynn's silence, Jesse smiled and asked, "Does Assistant Wallace have a boyfriend?"
"Huh? Yes, I have a boyfriend…" Lynn lied. She didn't even know why she'd said it. Maybe she subconsciously sensed a deeper meaning in his question. Looks were important to her, and Jesse just wasn't her type.
"Oh, well, I guess I'll have to work harder then. I'll get in line," Jesse said suddenly.
Lynn's hands paused on the keyboard. She looked up, stunned. "What… what do you mean?"
"I'm going to pursue you," he said, his tone serious.
Lynn immediately made an 'X' with her hands and rejected him flatly. "I have a boyfriend. And besides, you're not my type."
On the tenth day of her recovery, another supplier called, pressuring Jesse to deliver their goods or they would cancel the contract. She still remembered what Jesse told the supplier's manager. "I make money so my wife can have a good life. If I can't even take care of my wife, what's the point of making money? I wouldn't be much of a man then…"
Over the next ten years, Lynn became pregnant four more times, but each pregnancy ended in a threatened miscarriage. Slowly, she and Jesse began to argue constantly about having children. The small quarrels escalated into big fights, then into cold silence, until they were a couple in name only.
Jesse came home less and less. For 360 days a year, he was busy with work, leaving her to spend one lonely night after another in their empty villa. She tried to repair their relationship. She loved him, so she was willing to be the one to apologize.
One day, she decided to go to his office to talk things out and clear the air between them. She spent all morning cooking his favorite dishes. But when she arrived at his company, she saw Jesse with his arm around a pregnant woman. The woman was saying, "Our eldest got first in his class on the midterms, and our second passed level six in violin. They're waiting for you to come home and give them their rewards."
Jesse's eyes were full of tenderness as he looked down at the woman's belly. "Okay. And our little one, you have to be good, okay? Look how amazing your brother and sister are. Our baby will be just as amazing."
