The wind was bitingly cold in late December.
The sky over Clayborne City was gloomy, looking like it could snow at any moment.
Janina pulled her down jacket tighter and stood at the hospital entrance, waiting for Summer.
She had a prenatal check-up today. She was originally supposed to go with her best friend Wendy, but Wendy's boss had given her a last-minute assignment.
Unexpectedly, Summer had just stopped by the Holts' house to say goodbye.
When Grace told her Janina was at the hospital for a check-up, she contacted Janina and said she'd meet her there.
"Nina!" Summer got out of the taxi and saw Janina waiting for her at the main entrance.
Summer jogged over to her and adjusted her scarf.
"It's freezing. Why weren't you waiting inside?"
Janina smiled. "It's stuffy in there. It's nice to get some fresh air."
She looked Summer over and noticed she looked much healthier than before. The dullness in her eyes from the time of her divorce was gone.
"You're recovering well?"
"Yeah, Fairchild said I'm fine now. He's not home, but I bought him a gift. When he gets back, could you give it to him for me? I'm so grateful to him for helping me get better."
Summer's health had returned, and she was planning to find a quiet place to focus on her writing. She had originally come to say goodbye to Janina today.
"Summer, where are you planning to go? Will we still be able to get you to come to our get-togethers?" Janina asked in a teasing tone.
This place held too many painful memories for her. Now that she was healthy, she would seize every opportunity to prove her worth and live a better life. She would never again depend on others for her happiness.
Summer linked her arm through Janina's, and they walked into the hospital lobby.
She smiled lightly. "Don't worry, I'm still in Clayborne City. My parents are here, so I can't go too far. And thank you, you and Ava were a huge help in getting my manuscript payment so smoothly last time."
Seeing that Summer didn't want to reveal her exact address, Janina didn't press.
She knew Summer needed a change of scenery.
The ex-husband who had wounded her so deeply, and the marriage that had nearly made her give up her dream of writing—it was time to leave it all behind.
