Janina instinctively moved to avoid them. As far as she was concerned, the three of them were mortal enemies who should never cross paths again.
"Janina!" It was Julius's voice.
Janina stopped in her tracks.
She turned abruptly, her eyes cold as she stared at Julius and Yvonne. She said nothing, just watched them with an icy silence.
Julius let go of Yvonne's hand, a flicker of unusual joy appearing on his face for the first time. His usually indifferent eyes were now surprisingly bright.
He strode towards Janina. "You're pregnant? How many months? Why didn't you tell me?"
Three questions, one after another.
Clayborne City wasn't that big. Julius was bound to hear she was pregnant sooner or later. She just hadn't expected the news to break this soon, or in a place like this.
Suddenly, Janina wondered why she was even trying to hide. They were divorced. Julius had no right to interfere in her life.
"Ex-husband, my pregnancy has nothing to do with you. We're divorced, so stop bothering me." With that, Janina turned to leave.
Julius moved to block her path. His voice softened, but it sent a shiver down Janina's spine. "I know you're still angry, but how could the baby have nothing to do with me? I'm the father. I'll take responsibility."
Janina shoved him. "What kind of father are you? You were just a sperm donor. Even if the child is yours, they will have my family name, not yours. This has nothing to do with you. Now, move."
"Miss Holt, how can you say that?" Yvonne chimed in, her tone dripping with feigned concern. "You have no idea how busy Julius is. It's natural he might've been distracted at times. You could try being a little more understanding instead of speaking to him like that. This child belongs to both of you, not just you. You can't be so selfish."
Yvonne's words were meant to sound supportive of Julius, but they were also a subtle jab, painting Janina as petty and inconsiderate.
"Julius, don't be angry. Please don't fight with Miss Holt because of me. You two were married, after all. I'll just apologize to her," Yvonne pleaded, tugging at his sleeve.
Janina had no desire to keep watching this act. She was sick of it.
She walked away briskly, feeling two pairs of eyes on her back. Julius's gaze was burning hot. Yvonne's was chillingly cold.
In the conference room, the discussion dragged on for nearly two hours. As the dual champions of the design competition, both Janina and Yvonne were entitled to establish their own independent brands.
Janina remained focused on the business plan, deliberately ignoring the glances coming from across the table.
By the time the meeting ended, she hadn't had a sip of water in over four hours and her throat was parched.
She gently rubbed her belly and whispered, "It's okay, little one. Mommy will get some water, and then we'll go home."
