Abigail could tell from the blank expressions on Ethan and Grace's faces that the Holt siblings hadn't told them about the fight.
"Didn't Natalie tell you? Then again, after something like that, how could she bring herself to mention it?" Abigail said, her tone dripping with the feigned exasperation of an elder dealing with unruly children.
"It was one of Natalie's colleagues. They got into an argument because the girl claimed Natalie stole her boyfriend. I'm not sure how it happened, but next thing you know, your Janina threw the first punch, and then it turned into an all-out brawl."
A bystander happened to record a video of Janina and Natalie fighting, and it spread like wildfire.
Abigail had only heard about it from Marjorie Sullivan.
Now, she was relaying what she'd seen in the video, embellishing the details for Ethan and Grace's benefit.
The video didn't show everything, just Janina and Natalie hitting those other women, and some parts where their coworker May accused Natalie of stealing her boyfriend.
Abigail felt she finally had some dirt on the Holts, and she'd been wandering the neighborhood every day, just waiting for a chance to rub it in Grace's face.
Now that she'd found her, she wasn't going to let the opportunity slip.
Before Ethan or Grace could say a word, Abigail pressed on.
"I'm telling you, Grace, you need to raise your girls better. I know Natalie's getting on in years—what is she, twenty-five now? She might be desperate to get married, but that's no reason to go around stealing other people's boyfriends. If word gets out, who's going to want her?"
"You really need to have a talk with Natalie when you get home. I know the other girl said some nasty things, but she and Janina were far too rough. The other two girls… their faces were so swollen. They were merciful not to press charges against your daughters."
In Ethan and Grace's minds, their daughters were gentle souls.
However, the couple had always hoped their girls would be a bit tougher, more like their four older brothers.
All parents want is for their children to be healthy and able to stand up for themselves.
So, after hearing Abigail's account, they both breathed a sigh of relief. As long as their daughters weren't the ones who got hurt, that was all that mattered.
